Ram causing MB and CPU to fry?

Thread Starter
Hello All,

This will be a first for me.... I am a NOOB when it comes to forums, so please bear with me...

I have the following build:

CPU - AMD Phenom II X61055T
MB - Gigabyte 890gpa-ud3h
Cooling - Artic Cooler freezer pro 7 ver 2
Video - PNY GTX260 768MB 448bit ddr3
HDD - 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm (Primary)
HDD - 3x - 1TB WD ears 7200 rpm (Storage/ Apps)
Power - OCZ ModX Stream Pro - 600W

Ram - 4X - pc3 10666 OCZ platinum 7-7-7-@1.65v 2GB (8GB total)

Here is where I need help if possible....

I replaced above stated ram with 4X - pc3 10666 G.Skill RipJaws 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v 4GB (16GB total)

After making sure I did not have static build up, opened case, removed old ram, installed new ram, made sure seated correctly...now NOTHING.... will not post, beep, or anything.... I took out new ram and reinstalled 1 stick of original OCZ ram in slot closest to processor..., NOTHING... disconnected everything (HDD, VIdeo, DVD burner) and still no beep codes.... I have a pc speaker that works hooked up, still nothing. I even took out last stick and restarted...NOTHING. Swapped PSU with a 650W and same thing.

Now after my rant... my ?? could this new ram have jacked my MB or CPU, or both. nothing was OC'd and this is a new build as of 12/10

any help would be helpful... I have built 100+ boxes before , upgraded and TS them for 20+ years and never ran into this before... I am reaching out to the community for help.

Thanks for all assistance in this matter.

Reset CMOS battery, If still nothing, You probably got sent some duds.

Your rant, No, everything should be fine. Have you put the OCZ sticks back in and tried?

Interestingly enough here is a newegg review with issues like yours:
Quote:
Cons: I tried to upgrade my memory to G-Skill 1600 8GB kit. worked very well at 1333. would not boot at 1600. RMA TO GOODOLD NEW EGG.Orded 8GB Corsair Kit. Same problem. RMA. SAW the g-skill 1600 8GB snipper kit. Yes same problem. All ram was set up in Bios at proper speed and timeing.
Could be more to it.

Reset the CMOS battery; by just taking out the old RAM (running at the rated 1333 7-7-7 1.65V) and putting the new one in WITHOUT ensuring settings are 1333 9-9-9 1.5V beforehand, you're ensuing incompatibility. Most 1333 CL9 generic RAM (4GB DIMMs) will not hit 1333 7-7-7 even with increased voltage.

The user above in the Newegg review may have not raised CPU-NB voltage to run 1600Mhz or have a C2 rev processor which can have trouble running 1600Mhz. This is not an issue. All generic DDR3-1333 @ CL9-9-9 1.5V should run plug-n-play on motherboards with no problem or else defective.

The RAM should have not caused anything out of the ordinary to the mobo or CPU, however i think pioneerisloud was subjected to a similar failure recently related to swapping RAM...

The thread will just drift into oblivion. Glad you got it resolved. Interestingly enough my buddys Phenom II croaked too. First time i've seen a CPU that wasn't abused straight die.

No reason to close the thread. Other people might find it useful.

And my P8P67 Pro recently suffered the same thing happening to it. I replaced my RAM, and she never turned on again. Had to RMA the board, somehow the board got screwed up. Even though there was no ESD, and I did everything correctly (pretty sure I've got installing RAM down to an artform by now).
