550be testing

I have owned my amd rig for around 2 years now. I was not able to unlock the 3rd-4th cores right away but maybe that was due to my lack of knowledge.

I now have the newest version of BIOS for my ASUS M4A79XTD EVO and unlocking seems to be much more user friendly. Turning on unleashing mode and setting cores to auto initially shows "4 cores unlocked" on the post bios screen, however windows brings up a black error screen. If I manually enable the 1st-4th cores then windows loads fine. Problem is, even though the post bios screen shows "4 cores unlocked", only 2 are really enabled. I can tell by typing msconfig, boot, advanced and only 2 cores are allowed to be booted. CPU-z and AOD also only show 2 cores. I do get the Phenom x4 B50 processor to show up but it only shows 2 cores / 2 threads.

So then I tried enabling cores 1-3. This worked right out of the gate. CPU-z still shows Phenom x4 B50 processor, but everything from AOD, msconfig to CPU-z show 3 active cores. I ran prime95 small FFT's torture test for 8 hours and got zero errors. This is all with stock 15.5x, 2000HT link and 200NB. Just for testing purposes I have the CPU voltage set up to 1.45, NB at 2.6 and CPU NB @ 1.26. I know a CPU temp monitor will be off since I have a core unlocked but anyways HWmon is showing TMPIN0 as 39c.

Before I attempted to unlock this 3rd core I had 2 cores running @3.8 at 1.45v, NB running at 2400 @ 1.26 and my ram running at 1333. I was getting idle temps of 28c.

Since it doesn't appear I can get a 4th core to work, what speed on 3 cores would make it faster then what I had with 2 cores? I am primarily using this computer for gaming. Games like Crysis 2, GTIV with the new ICEmod, WOW everything maxed, and hoping to handle battlefield3 .

With the same voltages, I have the cpu bumped up to 3.5ghz, NB @ 2200 and it passed Prime95 for 6 hours. Is 3.5ghz NB @ 2200 w/ 3 cores faster then 3.8ghz NB @ 2400 w/ 2 cores for most gaming?

Try using auto instead of manual cores, set 1.4V VCore, 1.3V CPU-NB and 2.8 VDDA and see if it runs stable as a quad at stock speed. If so, go to overclocking.

I have the same board with a 555BE, just finished it at 4.0GHz.

I tried using the settings you posted and even tried bumping the Vcore to 1.5 still windows will not boot whether I have it set to auto or I manually try to use a 4th core. Either it locks up right when windows tries to start loading or it transfers to the BSOD with a red stripe. So to recap, unleashing mode with auto set for cores always shows 4 cores active and will not allow me to boot in windows.

I read somewhere that one thing to try is to run the 3rd or 4th core all by themselves and stress them with Prime or Linx to see which of the 2 deactivated cores are the weakest. How do you go about doing this? When I set the cores to manual, I can't disable the 1st core, and then if I try to just select either the 3rd or 4th core, BIOS gives me an error that says "unleashing mode failed", I then am able to press F1 to re-enter BIOS (setup). If I want to select the 3rd or 4th core I am being forced to also select the 2nd. I have tried selecting just the 1st, 2nd and 4th core and I get the same error. The only "unlocking" I have gotten to work is 1st, 2nd and 3rd core, not complaining

ATM with 3 cores I have (3.7ghz_1.4V VCore), (2200NB_1.3V CPU-NB) and 2.6 VDDA. It has run stable at this on Prime for 6 hours. Any suggestions of what voltages I should start lowering? I don't feel that I need to because with my cases airflow, my cpu is running an idle temp or ~33c, but less power is always nice.

Start P95, set it to run one thread. Open task manager, click the processes tab. Right click Prime95, click "set affinity". Uncheck all but the core you want to test.
