MSI P55A-G55 Unboxing and Benching

Thread Starter
So, to summarize a long story, I had a graphics card failure combined with stuttering that seems to actually be mobo-related, since I swapped my failed GTX 460 for a HD4850 and still saw the issues.

I'm finally resurrecting it by putting my i5 760 into this replacement mobo I snagged for about $100 from NCIX a month or so back.

Background info
Old system

And now for some slick shots of my new mobo. biggrin.gif I'll add more as I get the system together and start running benches.

Am using the Scythe Shuriken for now so as to test the system. Will switch for the Hyper 212+ later once I guarantee stability.

EDIT: It lives! See the third picture biggrin.gif

So check it out folks, been testing with my HD4850 to make sure everything works - so far so good. The next acid test will be to put my GTX 460 in and see if everything is jim dandy with that as well. biggrin.gif

Meantime here are some benchmarks to look at.

Hmm, the vDroop doesn't seem to obey the Intel spec but I have a LOT of aggressive power saving stuff left enabled - such as phase level control, EIST, you name it.

So if you look at my CPU-Z here, you'll see that at idle, the operating voltage is actually only around 0.88 V, plus or minus a bit. When I put Prime95 on it and fire that up, the operating voltage rises to 1.152 V. (EDIT: Intel's specification indicates that typical operating voltages are between 0.65 and 1.40 V, so my CPU's basically smack in the middle of the spec.)

As I understand vDroop, my idle operating voltage should actually be higher than my load operating voltage, as vDroop compensates for the increased load on the system.

All this is total stock, no overclocking yet. My goal at this stage is to shake down the system and be sure that the previous Gigabyte board (which TBH was always just a touch temperamental anyway) was at fault.

Also have attached some mobo and memory readouts from CPU-Z as well as a Vantage run I did at the High settings.

Well, I've prime95ed it to blazes and back - two runs of 8 hours each in blend and it's solid as a rock. I've run looped Vantage and looped 3DMark06, and I'm convinced this thing is stable. Now it's time to put my GTX 460 in! biggrin.gif

Will report back when that's done! biggrin.gif

(the only thing that I might have to worry about is the odd way this board does vDroop. Anyone mind helping me out on that? I can't figure out the CMOS config option for it.)

That is odd. It looks like speedstep is adjusting your vcore but not multiplier.

Eh, I set Win7 to "High Performance", so the base speed is always 2.93 GHz. It turbos up to 3.34 when the load is not on all four cores.

Update: I had an annoying issue with my PS/2 mouse making the BIOS think a keyboard was connected to it, plus AHCI thinking my 1 TB drive was a 4 TB drive. tongue.gif

The BIOS flash is a bit nonintuitive, but I was able to get it sorted and the flash fixed things! thumb.gif to MSI for that.

I'm going to be benching now with the GTX 460 on a clean Win7 install. smile.gif
