SSD Issues - Is this normal?

Thread Starter
I have just bought and installed a c300 128gb SSD drive as my boot drive on my sig system. I expected to see a huge improvement in both boot times and application launch times but I have to say I'm a little dissapointed. I am guessing that I may have some settings wrong as the system seems a little temperamental as some days it boots really fast and programs are snappy but other times it seems to hang for a few seconds on any command giving the 'not responding' message?

When I installed the drive I removed all other mechanical drives and selected IDE in the BIOS. I then installed Windows 7 64 Ultimate onto the formatted drive. Once installation was complete I changed IDE to AHCI and rebooted. I assume TRIM should be installed automatically but when I try the command : fsutil.exe behavior query DisableDeleteNotify
the window that pops up dissapears almost instantly so I am unable to read the info.

Any help with this would be appreciated as I feel I am getting the same if not poorer performance as I did with my RAID 0 barracudas.

I ran HD Tune Pro and this is what I am getting. Just doesnt seem consistent?

Attachment 222461

Thanks.

Ok, it would have been easier to set the SATA controller to AHCI before installing Windows. It only needs to be IDE when updating the firmware. You cant just simply change it AHCI in the BIOS after installing Windows 7. You need to edit the registry. Follow this thread:

Why didn't you set too ahci before the install of windows? You also shouldn't format the drive but just install too the unallocated space.

I would start over. Set in the bios AHCI. Install the proper drivers for your sata/chipset. Also use ATTO for your testing, as is much better for SSD.

Thanks for the responses. I must have read (or misread) somewhere that I had to select IDE before installation. Now I know I dont
The reason I formatted the drive was the SSD was previously used in a Macbook so I wanted to be sure any Apple files were removed from the drive incase it caused problems. I will have a read of the thread posted above and if need be I will reinstall Windows with ACHI enabled.
Hopefully this will sort out the slowness of this SSD.
Cheers.

You dont have to restart the installation.

1. Startup "Regedit
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
3. Open msahci
4. In the right field left click on "start" and go to Modify
5. In the value Data field enter "0" and click "ok"
6. Exit Regedit
7. Reboot

Forgot to ask - how can I be sure TRIM is enabled? Cannot see any mention of it in Windows anywhere.

Go to the Command Prompt (Click start and type cmd in search bar and click on the cmd symbol....im not sure if you have to right click and choose run as admin or not.) and type:

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

The results will be one of the following 2:

DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

Thanks - I'll have a go at the registry settings. As for the TRIM issue - as I said above the window just flashes up and closes again? No time to read what it says? How can I keep this Window up so I can read the info?
