HD5870 Artifacts on Low Voltages But Doesn't On Higher-than-stock

This is ridiculous.. It doesn't look like the GPU's issue but it very well may be.. It is just very confusing.

Whenever my hd5870 iss set to the stock voltages (1.212) 3dmark 11 starts artifacting in the first few seconds. 1.243 it is very rare and 1.255 i cant spot an artifact.

Something wrong with circuits cutting off the voltage getting to the cpu? I don't know if this is possible but this is the only thing I can think of..

Thoughts?

It's the exact same concept as overclocking and needing more voltage, this one just slipped through the binning. I would RMA it.

As scrappy said, It is just like when you OC and it needs more voltage. RMA it.

How long have you had the card and how hot does it get on load?
Also have you ever overclocked the card before and how much volts have you used max?

Never overclocked before, temps reach around 80-85c under full load @ 1.255v.

Sounds reasonable to me.. But it does this on stock clocks.

Temps reaching low to mid 80s? Even at full load my pcs+ powercolor 5870 reaches 68 max. I think you may need to go the RMA route as was mentioned above. I originally had a reference powercolor (same brand!) and kept getting these little green artifacts all over my screen. I RMA'd it and couldn't be happier. If you can, I say do it before it's too late.

Hmm, I'll have to check the card on another computer first. Because I can hear a squeak sound when I run atitool and a fan is not running, after further research that sound can come from a resonance circuit in the PSU, GPU or mobo and may be a sign of a bad component amongst the three.

If I still have it on another computer (the sound) and if I still have the artifact issue as well, I will assume it is a GPU issue and RMA it.

If I do not have it on another computer (the sound) and if I don't have the artifact issue anymore, I will assume it is a PSU/mobo issue.

I will try plugging another PSU on my mobo to see if it fixes the problem, and if the sound does not happen, I will buy a new PSU.

Thanks in advance guys!

Bump, still want to know what people think about this.

I have a Diamond ref in RMA right now because at idle volts it gives lines on the screen, but when its at stock volts, 1.175, it works fine. So when im surfing the web or something i get lines on certain parts of the windows.

Edit: better way to say it is when it down clocks to .975 I have problems. When i use constant voltage in Afterburner, and set volts to at least 1.1v its just fine.

Well if it's artifacting at stock settings RMA is preety much the only way to go unless you want to edit the BIOS and set higher than stock volts....
