Wow thanks for all the responses!
Portability isn't an issue. Whenever I am out and about I usually have my backpack that is mostly empty. I don't want everyone around me hearing what I am listening to, due to the fact that most people would be driven to insanity hearing DFA when they don't want to.
I'm looking for around the ear phones.

So I'll check into these ones unless someone rules them out for one reason or another.
Ultrasone PRO 750
AD700 (sort of concerned about the lack of bass?) I gather these to be Open Back. Should I be looking at the A700 if I don't want passerby's to hear?
HD 598
Grado SR 125/225

I also have to find a place where I can try these out. Instrument shops would probably be a good place to start?

EDIT: Looks like the ATH-ES7 have been discontinued

If you live in the US, you'll have a hard time finding a store to try out headphones. The AD700 really lack bass, and the A700 isn't that great in sound quality.

Canada. Probably even harder than in the States.
I'll probably rule out those AT then. M50's?

Well your budget is $250, the M50 is a $120 headphone (and IMO, they're not great for your type of music).

If you want a great all-rounder on that list you had, the HD 598 would be it.

Here's the thing about Grados, their house sound is not preferred by some people. Ultrasones are usually bass and treble oriented; mids are not their focus. The 598 has punchy bass(more than AD700), clear liquid mids, and sparkly highs.

Awesome. Thanks a lot for your help. I really appreciate it.
But the 598 seem out of my price range. In Canada at least.
Compare Amazon
USA USA
with Amazon (all 3rd party).
Might you happen to know where these can be had in Canada under $250?

Best Buy Canada has them for $300. But still that is stretching how much I would like to spend.

uh, guys, you do know that Death From Above 1979 was an electronic band right? (That broke up far too early but hey...)

They will need an all-round balanced sounding headphone tbh. Blind recommending is >.<

Obviously as stated, it for both inside and outside use, so an AD700 is no good (unless you want people to stare at you constantly because they can hear everything in your music + the big dark pink grill. Also it needs to be easy to run effcientcy wise

Will reply back in a hour or so but really....

I have HD555s which I think you would like for the same reasons as the 598. It's a cheaper, older model of the 598s as my understanding goes. Lacks in bass a bit, but mids and highs are just beautiful.

Yeah! They are back together... sort of. I saw them at Sasquatch music festival in Washington, US at the end of May and they were awesome. I drove for 2 days just to see them.

What phones do you recommend then?

Thanks for the input. I am going to an a/v shop later this week to check out some Sennheisers. I'll be looking at both the 598 and 555 if they have them.

The Sennheisers are open headphones, so for outdoor use they would be pretty poor. At decent volumes anyone nearby will hear what you're listening, and unless you're listening really loudly you'll hear whatever is going on in the background.

If that's not an issue, they're great phones, especially in mid-oriented music. The HD598 are newer versions of the HD595, which are/were a "step up" from the HD555s (it's pretty well established a simple mod will "transform" 595s into 555s"). All of them will sound very very similar, and I recommend just getting whichever is cheapest. They're all fairly easy to drive, and you can get them decently loud from an iPhone/iPod, though an amp doesn't hurt.

Dang. Didn't realize that those senns were open. Most of the time I will be using these outdoors or on the bus or what have you. I don't want to bug everyone around me...
