Yeah, it's a bummer. There are a lot of tradeoffs when deciding headphones. For portable use and overall great sound I'd recommend the Denon AH-D1100 headphones. I'm sure others will have some more suggestions.

Closed cans...Try Sennheiser HD 25-1 or Fostex TH-7.

I'm still probably going to check out the 598's. This is still overwhelming to me. I think I have all the advice that I can get. Now I just have to go try them all out.

Thanks for all your advice everyone!

The HD598 is open backed...

I'd actually go the Ultrasone HFI-780.

My old roommate had a pair of Senn HD25's and he loved them. I tried them out; they are kinda bass heavy, but otherwise a very nice closed can.

Best of luck! The best way to know what you like is to go try them.

I am sort of leaning towards an open back now. I actually only take the bus a small part of the time... Usually I ride my bike to work and I can't wear over the ear headphones with my helmet on.
So I would say I will usually be using these at home indoors. I'll use my buds on my bike to work, and the odd occasion I take the bus to work, I have the option of my cans or buds.

Also, since headphones are so ridiculously overpriced in Canada, has anyone had any experience with the Ebay seller razordogdeals2008? I'm not sure I can even ask that on these forums... Sorry if I can't.

Open back is amazingly better, I'm telling you this while covering and uncovering the back of my Sennheiser hd595's. Open headphones just sound so much clearer.

To be fair, it depends. If you want to listen to some trance with your eyes closed and get lost in it, a good pair of closed cans that can shake your head are preferable. For acoustics and vocals, I couldn't do without open cans, specifically the 595s.

I was in the same spot as you , overwhelmed by the quantity out there .

I was aiming for comfort and lightweight as I had a heavy pair before and never going back

I can say that these sennheiser rs 170 sound better than my corsair h1sa and are about 100 grams lighter , they are EXTREMELY LIGHT AND COMFORTABLE .

no hiss , battery life tremendous , no interference with my wireless router .

however it does crash my router everytime i start it but I just repair connection and it repairs itself after 1 minute and dooesnt do it again till the next start up .

wear my headsets all the time fr homework , cooking , chores , w/e

No need for sound to play , it isolates real well for quiet time .
