No, this has everything to do with remaining competitive in a highly commoditized market. In this sort of market economic profit remains near zero, so to maintain investment flow and positive growth, small amounts of efficiency gain need to be ruthlessly pursued. Its called business.
Though I would be very interested in your particular model of this market's marginal returns and the deadweight costs imposed by both scenarios, including opportunity costs and the game theory outcomes based on competitor's propensity to react.
