Iphone and apple are off my list now as well.
I still stand by the fact that no one is forced to work there. They could find another, less stressful job if they wanted. Heck, that's what I'd do.

But they're greedy. It's a well-paid position, so they'll try to push themselves through the mind-numbingly boring work, exceedingly long hours, etc etc. Some of them get pushed over the edge, and commit suicide. It's all their decision. The decision to get a job there was theirs. The decision to continue working there, even after it became more than they could handle, was theirs. The decision to commit suicide, was theirs.

*shrug* JMO.

@SgtSpike
you are familiar with asian work laws and social situation?

greed has nothing to do with it, but rather extortion from upper management.
you work around the clock or they will replace you.
and once you got loans from bank or have to repay mortgage, you got hungry mouths to feed at home...what would you do? just leave? yeah, right.

Population keeps growing, efficiency keeps rising, resources keep getting scarcer. It's common sense, this absolutely not a sustainable course.

The more capitalist a society is, the harder this issue will tear up society. It's actually not an issue at all, it's only an issue if you're obsessed with growth and productivity like most of the world is. A society that has hyper efficient production from technology, non-consumer oriented culture, and spreads the wealth to the population sounds like the best scenario for a future society imo.

At the point this practice becomes widespread, it won't be a problem with jobs, it'll be a problem with the system [economy] that needs to undergo a paradigm shift.

I have hungry mouths to feed and a mortgage to pay too, but if me and my co-workers are being abused at my workplace, to the point that some are committing suicide, you're damn right I'll leave!

And yes, I know that the situation there isn't equal to the situation in the US. Job opportunities are probably scarcer. But I would find some way to make it work. Probably by starting with not getting a mortgage or hungry mouths to feed until I had saved enough to buy a residence outright and pay for the hungry mouths for years to come should I find myself without a job.

There's a little something called "self responsibility" that seems to be lost among today's young people. It isn't the government's responsibility to provide for you. It isn't Foxconn's responsibility to provide for you. It is YOUR responsibility to provide for you and your family. If you can't do that, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

Yep, efficiency is an awful, awful thing. We should go back to walking on foot everywhere, and farming gardens in our backyard with hoes and pickaxes.

Spreading the wealth will never work. People are and always will be greedy. As much as it SOUNDS good, it just won't happen. If you tried it, people would become complacent with laziness and non-productivity, until the whole system collapsed. The next best thing is capitalism, because it captures people's selfishness to increase productivity, innovation, and efficiency.

Everyone always cries about people losing jobs when something like this happens, but the reality is we need this to advance. Its simple economics. If you have 10 farmers that produce X amount of food, and you can replace them with 1 farmer running farming equipment and move the 9 other farmers to make something else, say shoes, you end up producing more as a whole. Of course, in the short run it sucks for the workers because they get laid off and have to find another job, but long term it is necessary to advance. Resources (including labor) should go to where they can produce the most, and in this case it is not here.

respect for self awareness. a quality that many people lack nowadays.

I hope you realize that not all people are as lucky as you are.
Looks like you got good educations and good moral values by parents.
