Given your budget, and what's needed, you have 2 really great options.

1) Core i3 2100, mATX board, 4GB of some good RAM.... (obviously the rest)
2) AMD APU 3850, Socket FM1 board, 4GB of higher performance RAM (1866 or better).

I'd personally go with the AMD APU on this budget. It'll be plenty fast for her daily activities. And if she ever DID decide to install some sort of a game on their for her free time, it'll handle it with ease.

The Phenom II line would be a waste for this use in my opinion. Especially a Thuban.

With the money saved, get her a Crucial M4 60GB SSD.

Yea man, this is pointless, don't need a desktop. Get a monitor, mouse, keyboard and a backup HDD drive so she can backup her importiant files. Done.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157228 <-- I just bought it a week ago, it is a very good quiet motherboard.

The integrated graphics will let her do anything she wants to, including games
Chugs VERY little power, and it is SUPER quiet. It is also small, so you can get her a small case.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134751

More than enough ram for her. Unless she keeps like a hundred tabs open, she should be fine.

Case and other things can be had for cheap. No need for a dedicated GPU that way either.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811154091 <-- a cheap case for the motherboard, comes with a meh power supply too.

Now all you need left is a harddrive, which can be had off newegg for 40 or so bucks these days.

Motherboard + cpu = 100
RAM = 15
Case + PSU = 45
HDD = 45

Total = 205 without tax and shipping
Shipping would be about 15 dollars at most, and tax would be 16
New total will be 236

Done, nothing else

For a $500 budget build, I gotta say I'm loving the Llano setup. I've built 2 already for family members and they are both still shiny and new, but I was impressed by the zip from such a cheap setup.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131768
Asus FM1 Motherboard $105
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103942
AMD A8-3850 APU $140

At that price, you'd be lucky to get an i3 and a decent motherboard, plus would still probably want a graphics card in there.

for everyday tasks, a sandy will be much faster than the x6.

heres what i got for my mum, and it flies

Pentium g620
Asrock H61 chipset mobo(forgot the name)
Kingston KVR 1.5v 4gb
Antec TruePower 350w
Seagate Barracuda 500gb
CM Elite 335
Stock sandy cooler
Samsung DVDrw

I got this lot for about 320 AUD. So yeah. Its pretty good considering its a sandy. You should be able to do even cheaper, since computer parts are usually cheaper in the US.

This is a quick one a put together. Maybe you will like it?
I thought she wouldn't need to much room, being she had a laptop. The RAM is fast, she won't need 6GB's, but I thought I would throw it in. Llano would be good for her needs. Just change the HDD or RAM to save some $$. I went for a small case, you don't need a big one. And some really quiet fans, It shouldn't be loud if it's being used for what shes using it for.

Hope you like it!

also for day to day tasks, the sandy architecture will actually be faster than most budget CPUS, so for facebooking and MSNing, it should be epic. i would personally get an i3 2100
though.
