Cousin needs a laptop for college

What is your maximum budget? Didn't list, his parents are buying

What country are you in? United States

What will be the uses of this laptop? Internet browsing, general office/productivity, audio recording, producing, and mixing, not much gaming AFAIK

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you? no

What screen size do you require? Not specified

What screen resolution do you require? not specified, but I'm sure he'd like a lot of space

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay? I think he would definitely prefer new, but refurbished could be okay

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet) Unspecified, just in the 4-7 hour range I assume. Wouldn't want a battery running out during a course.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings? Probably won't be playing video games, as he has an Xbox 360 he's satisfied with and doesn't play it often anyways

What operating system do you need? (if any) OS X or Windows is fine, I don't think he's familiar with Linux

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.) Maybe one well-geared towards audio production and recording.

How much hard drive space do you need? Probably 300GB or more at least, he loves music and endlessly plays his guitar. And by endlessly, I mean endlessly.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.) Maybe an external/dedicated sound card for recording (E-MU 1212?) would be a essential for him I guess.

Is there anything else we need to know? Provide plenty of options. He is pretty picky and I'm sure he'll know what he wants when he sees it. I'm sure he'll have to carry it around, so not a battery-hogging desktop replacement. He's interested in OS X because of the programs it supports and how reputable it is among artists, although he is most familiar with Windows.
THANKS, GUILT1!

MBP 15 or 17 would be good for him. Popular for college students. Although maybe an HP ENVY 14 Beats Edition?

I doubt that laptop has anything better than an integrated sound card. Otherwise, the MBP sounds good, as well as the hardware configuration for the Envy. Just wish it wasn't stylized for the Nike-collecting trend kid.

Ask him for a budget and screen size so we can help you better, also ask if there's anything specific he wants like long battery life, thin and light, ect.

I'd suggest buying an ExpressCard Sound Card for him like this:
