AM3+ Build - Do I need anything else? - Page 2

After taking another look at some benchmarks, it appears to me that the preformance increase between a 6870 and a 6950 is IMHO not worth $70... So I'll just be getting a 6870 now. And according to the "Quick'n'Dirty PSU Calculator" running two of those in crossfire, with a x6 (Which I'll be getting simply because I don't actually know how long it'll be until I can upgrade to a bulldozer.) and a 9600GT as a PhysX card I SHOULD be good with the 750w PSU xd suggested.

I would go with the watercooling for the CPU, but I got the HAF-X for two reasons, one of which being that the airflow should be good enough for now, because I don't want to fry my first build attempting to do watercooling xD

Picked up the 1866Mhz Ripjaws as opposed to the Sniper simply because I didn't see much of a difference.

Would get a cheaper HDD to cut the cost of it, but I have nearly 500gb of Steam games, can't get much cheaper while still having any space.

Only thing left for me to decide now is whether to stick with an x6 or get 965/955... It'd be cheaper to get the 965/955 but the power of it would be nice. Would a x6 help at all for gaming? I'll might be able to upgrade to bulldozer early next year, but whatever I get will be more powerful than my current POS machine.

Check out some benchmarks comparing the x4 and x6...

A few days ago I was actually thinking about the x6 myself until bulldozer comes out. The x6 actually performed worse than the x4 in many instances. These are for games of course, I'm sure encodes/transcodes/graphical intensive apps will take advantage of the x6 and outperform the x4.

From what I can see is that the main difference is in the clock speed, right? Obviously if a game can utilize 4 cores it would only utilize 2/3 of an x6's cores, but if the clock speeds were the same then you would get very similar performance? That's what I gathered from what I read, though I'm not entirely sure as to how accurate it is.

I'm running a amd 955 at 4.0ghz right now on an asrock 970 extreme4 motherboard and it plays all the games great while I wait on the fx 8150 black edition. If you are just gonna switch out the CPU when the 8 core launches there's no point in spending a bunch on a cpu
