Windows Security update only for AMD??

Thread Starter
Long story short, Windows update fails every time I try to install one of the updates listed under "Important" (it's the update: KB2506212, with the error code 8024200D). I already asked on the Microsoft support boards and someone directed me to the correct link to download the update manually. However, when I clicked the update to download it, I noticed under "Architecture" it said AMD64, and I have an Intel CPU. (I'm also running Windows 7 Ultimate x64)

Now, is it possible that, that is why the update always failed? Should I still proceed in downloading it, and installing it? I could use some advise in this situation as I don't want to screw up my system files and end up having to re-install windows again.

Here is the link to the exact update: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...2-654f153704b4

And here is the link to all MS Catalog for all updates named KB2506212: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...aspx?q=2506212

Thank you for any help you can provide!

I would just hide it, but it wont kill you if you get it installed so it goes away

So does that mean that this update, is in fact only for AMD-based systems?

I think it pertains to a 64-bit OS not entire just for AMD (correct me if I'm wrong). I think it was AMD who 1st developed/used a 64bit proc that's why it's called a AMD64 (again correct me if I'm wrong)

Install it. You are running a 64-bit OS. AMD developed the x86-64 CPU instruction set. AMD named it AMD64, and Intel has a fairly similar version named Intel64. Microsoft still calls it AMD64. Every Intel and AMD CPU released now uses that x86-64 instruction set.

i think you're right ConradTP

amd64 isn't dedicated to amd only, works both on intel and amd, as i've recently installed something from microsoft that has the code name blablabla.amd64, and it worked fine. that something i installed was the new microsoft camera codec pack that supports raw file.

@op: but yeah, i don't know why you can't install the update, but i'm certain it ain't got anything to do with the name 'amd64'

Yeah, AMD64 is just the instruction set that was developed by AMD. It is used by both companies so that has nothing to do with the update failing. I have several updates on my i7 920 rig that refuses to go through. My SB rig installs them just fine though. The only difference as far as software goes is the SB rig has SP1 while the 920 does not. It seems like my issue is due to not having SP1, not sure about yours. I'd just hide it for now, until/if you get it figured out.

amd 64 came from athlon 64 processors in which intel copied the instruction set, actually i think it's still called am64 under intel.
it's probably a security issue under the 64 bit instruction set in both parties.
