To Hyperthread...or not to Hyperthread...2600K benchmarks

There's so many posts out there asking whether one should buy the 2500 or the 2600. I had different reasons to run the tests, but I figured I'd share and maybe someone will find the results helpful.

Based on these results, doesn't look like there's much gain when processing files in Lightroom or running through a bunch of filters in Photoshop, or even encoding using WMM. However, Premier Pro, Elements and Handbrake all showed 7%-27% gains using hyperthreading.

Here are the tests I ran:

Handbrake - 0.9.5 - convert a 6GB .vob directory to a 1.1GB MP4

Premier Elements 9 - to be honest I don't recall what I converted
Premier Pro CS5 - I don't recall what I converted
Windows Movie Maker - don't recall

Photoshop CS5 - ran this: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/photoshop.php
Photoshop CS4 - ran this: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/photoshop.php

Lightroom 3.4 - processed 63 - 21MP raw files (~27MB each) to 11MB jpg

I use HT for the sole purpose of folding. I have no other use for it other than some video encoding and even that doesn't get a huge increase with HT. Folding gets a pretty large boost from HT, probably the best use for it so far to date.

i turn it on only if i convert videos etc etc, but that's like 5% of my 100% gaming life. Lol.

20% improvement (using Handbrake) is a pretty solid gain. We spend many many hours to go from 3.8ghz to 4.5ghz and that's only about 20% better as well.

Very interesting, because I only do video encoding in windows movie maker live, looks like I have nothing to gain with spending extra on the i7 other then "possible" future proofing. I never render anything, don't use photoshop much, dont have a working copy of premiere and won't likely in the near future.

I also don't Fold for my own personal reasons. I think an i5 overclocked to around the 4 ghz range will do me good for my needs for the next couple of years and pocket the $100 for other things
