Should I get a new video card ?

Hey all ..

Havent posted here in a very long time, but with my recent video card problems, I know this is the place to ask.

I have a launch Sapphire 5870 running at stock, has never been overclocked, and runs at the stock 850/1200 settings 24/7.... In the last month or so, I have the same 2 problems over and over, and always while running a game (mostly WoW).

Either I will blue screen, getting a (I think) dxgkrnl.sys has crashed error message, or the drivers will simply stop responding/successfully recovered. But either way, my gameplay is interrupted, programs shut down, etc ....

I have tried the 11.5 drivers, and (currently running) the new 11.7 drivers and its the same. Previous to those I had been running a very old driver, somewhere around 10.1 or something similar. The problems never happened then tho. I only upgraded them when WoW released its latest patch 4.2 Firelands, and I started to get the above 2 issues, so I figured to upgrade finally.

Any suggestions are welcomed. I really have babied this card since day 1 ... never overclocked, fan always very high, card stays usually under 75c round the clock. If it indeed may be something with the physical card, what is a good replacement ? I have been out of the loop the last 18 months or so, but have heard the new 6950 is very nice .. However -- I would only want something more powerful than what I have now, not really interested in buying something inferior to the 5870.

Much appreciated in advance !

What temps does your 5870 hit? You mostly play wow? A new video card is not needed. The crashes sound more like software or memory issues to me. Might try troubleshooting those before spending money.

When just sitting on my desktop, browsing the net etc ... my temps are usually 45c or under. When playing WoW they will rise to about 70c-75c under full load. I have everything in the game set to Ultra/max settings. Prior to the newest patch tho, Id play for sometimes 10 hours straight and never had a single issue. Also, I wasn't suggesting buying a new card for the sake of being able to play WoW at better settings .. the card tears through it just fine. I was asking due to the fact that the card I have now is starting to burn out or otherwise fail on me.

If indeed this could be a software or memory issue, what can I do to trouble shoot it ? 1 thing I thought of is to try and downgrade the speeds and see if that might help, altho it would pain me to have it running at lower than stock.

RMA it. its Sapphire. Isnt that why you baught sapphire? why replace it? renew it.

its running pretty warm IMO for a stock cooler, i would clean it. DONT TAKE IT APART. its sapphire. update drivers, try it in a friends machine if you must. if problems persist, have Sapphire replace/repair it.

Yes RMA. My 5870 died within the first year and had to RMA. And got another brand new one that is plagued by the same issues. Worst experience iv ever had with a graphics card and company(HIS).
