Question about 6970s going out of stock

Thread Starter
Since one of my 5770s in crossfire failed (no longer under warranty) I've been debating if I should just get another one, or upgrade all together. A large security deposit refund and Newegg gift card clinched the decision, and I began lusting after a HIS 6970 IceQ. The check took a while to come in through, and it went out of stock on Newegg a week or two ago. As I kept checking back, I noticed that other 6970s were going out of stock. A week ago, only 4 models were in, this morning it's down to two. Edit - (Down to one as of 4:18 PM EST on 8/3/2011)

Anyone have any clue why this is happening, or if manufacturers just aren't keeping up with demand? I heard on TwitCH weekly this morning that they expect the 7000 series in September or October, but it doesn't seem like they'd stop making 6970s for a product that doesn't even have a set release date yet... I could be missing (a great many) something(s). I am kind of new at this.

Thanks for any insight!

I'd gather A. They are gearing up for a different promotion B. There is high demand for certain models / low demand for certain models.

I'm trying to take a zen attitude to the whole thing, but every time I have to lower the settings in my games so the video lag goes down I get a little grumpier.

Same issue here. I was all pumped up to get the XFX 6970, then as soon as my paycheck was deposited, it disappeared. I waited a day then decided I would probably get the Sapphire model, but next time I was ready to order it was gone too.

I doubt I would switch to Nvidia just because of a stocking issue, but as time goes on I find myself eying the 570s more and more...

The 6970 series has been iffy.

I fear that at the price point these are at the suppliers are afraid of large inventories to discount should the 7XXX cards start dropping.

I Love my card cuss... I spent alot on it but Im not that impressed.

Just under 400$ with shipping and u know what... not that great. I think I may have been expecting more but while Benchmark software works well on OC's i have run, real world gaming chokes this silicone slab silly.

I am considering upgrading my psu but I think it's just the nature of this card.

Would I buy this card again... difficult to say. My last card, the XFX 5770 was a champ and my upgrade path was going to CF, I worked a business deal for a friend and this card was my commission...

My friend just hooked me up with an Asus 5770 I should be able CF with my Sapphire.... if that works, think maybe I should just hold out for a 7xxx drop in the next few months?

This is really pissing me off too. I just got my first XFX 6970 delivered last week, out of a planned tri-fire set up, and now the card has been deactivated on newegg. ***?

I am in the same boat, I purchased an MSI Lightning 6970, and planned to throw in a second one when I'd tucked away enough money. Few weeks later they are all deactivated and out of stock.

After several phone calls and emails to MSI, I got an email from a sales manager telling me they would be available.

"1st or 2nd week of August they should be back in stock, AMD has a shortage of the high end GPU"

this would explain why shortages seem to be out across all manufacturers - so we should be seeing retailers with replenished stock quite soon.

Fingers crossed
