What is SSSSS? Simply the short for Screen-Space Subsurface Scattering. SSSSS allows to run Subsurface Scattering (or SSS) and then skin rendering at interactive framerates in game environments. Thanks to SSSSS, skin calculations are done in screen resolutions (and not in texture resolutions) and the cost depends on the screen-space coverage: the smaller the head, the smaller the cost!

As the name suggests, various surface layers scatter/reflect light, the top tissue is transluscent, less the deeper you go in. They're apparently able to simulate that effect quite accurately. It looks impressive.

from what i read, is something that allows to render skin based on resolution (size) instead of texture. you get better performance and the same result as if it was based on texture rendering. Though when you are near the person it consumes much more

Also, i think this has been done before, though maybe not the "screen space" part.

I think this demo used sub-space scattering(for when the light goes through the skin of the...things...)
Keep in mind this demo is for the 7800GTX, so its quite old...
