A newbs quest to overclock to 3.6ghz

Thread Starter
As the title suggested I am attempting to overclock my e6600 from 2.4ghz to as close to 3.6ghz without going above 1.5 volts. My system build is shown below. I will update this every time I attempt to overclock. Any suggestions would be nice because as the title said I am a newb and this is the first time I'm overclocking. Im currently trying to overclock my cpu without touching the ram because I'm still a little confused on it, but since my ram is clocked at 800 mhz I do not see any reason to overclock it because the max i can go without touching my ram is 3.6ghz, please tell me if I am wrong.

First Night

After about a little less than an hour of trial an error I was able to overclock my cpu to 3.0 ghz with an FSB of 333 (I am not going to go straight for 3.6, but go slowly up testing my stability to make sure my cpu can handle it). The lowest vcore I could start it at was 1.41875 volts.

Day Two, Right at noon

So i tried upping the anti by bringing my FSB to 378 so my clock speed becomes 3.4 ghz bringing me one step closer to 3.6 Ghz. I changed my voltage to about 1.45000 volts, sadly this did not work, I tried again raising it to 1.47500, this also did not work. Out of fear of destroying my cpu because 1.5 is the max recommended voltage i decided to try and go to 3.2 ghz, i changed my voltage to 1.45000 volts, this did not work. So i guess this day was failure, i changed my voltage back to 1.41875 volts and the FSB back to 333. Now i did notice my ram timing increased, after I overclocked to 3 ghz, it was original 5-5-5-15, but now it is 5-7-7-20, I thought the only thing that was supposed to change was the frequency, which and it changed to 499.5 mhz or 500 mhz, my computer ran orthos for 2 hours without any issues, so I assume the ram voltage is fine as is (normal), i will run a full 12 hour test with both prime95 and orthos when I finish my overclocking. But my second attempt question is why did the timing change?

Day 2-Night
I tried turning on my computer with my thought to be stable 3.0 ghz with 1.41875 voltage, but it did not boot up, then i raised it a tad, but that also didnt work, so im a little confused, why isn't this working. Help anyone.

Day 2-Night- Part 2
So i tried to fixing my problem and oddly enough i did and was able to overclock it to 3.2 ghz, but I didn't test it under prime or orthos yet. Apparently the issue was that my core voltage was too high it seemed?!!? I'm confused, very much, I also raised my ddr2 overvoltage to +.1 so it should currently be at 1.95 clocked at 533 mhz, also my timings went up again to 5-8-8-20 can anyone help me here and answer these two questions. So currently my cpu is clocked at 3.2ghz with an fsb of 356 and a voltage of 1.45. One step closer to my goal.

Day 3-We learn something new everyday
Well i discovered a problem last night that i did not record which was that my motherboard would reset the bios everytime i cold booted. I researched a bit and there weren't any definite solutions, but some suggested that it had to do with the smart fan option, I tried that and also I found out that there was an advanced setting in my bios by pressing ctrl+f1, which gave me access to the ram timings, and a few more settings. With all of this I changed my gmch to +0.1, ddr2 overvoltage to +0.2, FSB overvoltage to +0.1 and vcore to 1.45, then i brought my fsb to 400, I didn't touch the ram multiplier, but this was grave mistake. I restarted my computer, I thought everything was going well, because I booted into windows, and the cpu was clocked at 3.6 ghz, my goal, I did a prime95 test, and left it for about 5 minutes, when I came back I had received the BSOD, my first one I've ever seen. It said I had a hardware failure, so I assumed my cpu did not have enough voltage. So after a good 1-2 hours of tweaking, i currently have my cpu clocked at 3.4ghz, with a core voltage of 1.45, i can't remember what my ram multiplier is at, but my according to cpuz my dram frequency is at 472.5 mhz, with timings of 5-7-7-20 (I set them myself, but i have no clue what im doing here). I am currently doing a stress test in prime95 and its been over 3 hours with no errors.

Day 3-Night- SUCCESS

After nine hours of strenous testing my OC came out with 0 warnings and errors, so currently rig is stable, i will most likely try and go to 3.6ghz tomorrow and then do another prime95 test, ill tweak from there.

Day 4-Night-Slow ram

My cpu is really fast im loving it, I really notice the speeds, so I think I will abandon my goal to 3.6 and stick with 3.4 because 200 mhz won't make too much of a difference and I already of hot temperature of 40-65 degrees (probably cause I didn't refine the voltage), but I did notice my loading time is a tad slower, its noticeable, but not to the point were I would complain, but Im just wondering is that because I lowered my timings, because my frequency went up from 400 to 472.5, but I did lower the mutliplier from auto (3) to 2 so that also may be something can anyone help me, because I kind of want faster loading times and I'm willing to spend the time refining my cpu voltage to lower my cpu temps ultimately lowering my system temps.

Day 5-Getting closer

Ok i made a mistake my multiplier is currently at 2.5 so the ratio is FSB 4:5 DRAM, to speed things up a tad I lowered my timings to the stock timings, so it is currently at 5-5-5-18 (why is it 18 I have no idea) I also refined my voltage a tad so it should be 1.4375 or something close to that I can't remember (the sad thing is I just changed it 5 minutes ago) I'm currently running a prime95 test to see if my timings won't cause problems and my voltage is a enough for the cpu. To answer 2thAche's suggestion: Wouldn't that slow down my loading time which the opposite of what i want to do, and its currently stable (im not talking about my current voltage Im testing but my previous one) Also wouldn't that greatly reduce my speed because I read from a few other forums that intel cpus respond faster with higher ram frequency (what i have) while AMD chips respond faster to lower timings, so wouldn't a better decision be to raise the frequency and raise the timings

Day 5-Night

Well it looks like my journey ends here. After another 8 hours of testing my rig seems to be stable. I'm pleased with my cpu speed, and my ram speed after I fixed the timings. My final clock is at 3.4 ghz with a voltage of 1.4425, my ram is clocked at 372.5 with a mutliplier of 2.5 and the timings are 5-5-5-18 with an extra +0.2 voltage making have a voltage of 2.05. I have an extra +0.1 for the FSB voltage and GMCH voltage. My current temperature is ranges from 33 during idle and 59 under 100% load. Thanks for all the help, but the reason I did this was really to record my first adventure in overclocking. Im still a newb but I hope, when I get a new rig in 2 years Ill push it even farther.

i mean, eventually there is a certain point where you will need to oc ram because having a super fast cpu is useless with slow a$s ram as well as faster ram sometimes helps with stability. Just keep going as much as you can with fsb, volts, and mutiplier. I would be okay with the volt at 1.7 if there is sufficient cooling in the case

Your RAM is failing. Set it to 1:1 with FSB, there is no need to be pushing DDR2 800 to 1066 especially while you're trying to OC your CPU. I'm assuming you're talking it's bus speed, not DDR2 speed?

So are you saying I should lower the ram multiplier or cpu multiplier, because thats the only way to achieve a 1:1 ratio, I think, correct me if im wrong, as you see im am quite the newb, and if your talking about day 2-night part 2 than yea i was talking about my ram frequency (533)

Set your RAM multiplier to its lowest setting, which should be 1:1 with FSB.
