Ripping movies at home and transferring them to your phone doesn't (necessarily) mean he isn't paying for them. It could just be that he'd prefer to buy a physical disc rather than paying for data charges.

If it's acceptable quality to watch, what does the year matter?
Watching a 3" screen and 1' viewing distance gives you the same effective screen size as watching a 30" screen from 10'. And that ain't exactly a hardship is it? Sure, it's probably smaller than your main TV at home, but it's not bad considering you get to watch films or TV shows wherever you like.
And most smartphones now have better resolution than DVD video - and I think you'll find most people still find DVDs perfectly acceptable.
