Havn't read the whole thread, but If OP wants to RMA, it's his choice. end of story, you may not like it but deal with it. If only some of you were aware of the amount of CPU's some of the bencher's get through you'll understand.

sure it's his money, and sure he can do what he wants, but rma'ing after you repeatedly fry a chip from pumping massive volts through it or because you got a "bad" chip is blatantly exploiting the system.

if every customer did this i don't think intel would be making any money, but it's "ok" because we're in the minority here?

That doesn't make sense there....
If CPU is made only for benching and getting world records, then it's understandable.
But it isn't. Everyone wants good working CPU.
Who likes to RMA every chip they got???
Unless you intentionally do it to make certain retailer unhappy on purpose....
But that is completely another topic... And this isn't the case here.

I kinda feel like I need to throw my 2 cents in just to help some people understand how the fabrication of silicon products works.

Some chips perform differently than others because of the manufacturing process of silicone IC's. They cut a wafer of silicone out, then use a laser duplicator to polarize the pathways on the silicone used for circuits. Then the polarized areas are doped with hafnium or another semiconductor to create the actual P-N fields that make the CPU work. The individual parts of silicone for each CPU are then cut apart and mounted onto a normal PCB substrate for socket mounting.

The further from the center of the die a particular CPU is taken from, the more microscopic defects occur from minor variances in distance and photonic irregularity. Basically, if you get a chip taken form the center of the die, you got a major winner. If it's pulled from near the edge, it can have more irregular pathways which can have leakage and droop much moreso than a better (more central) chip.

Sometimes these defects get past Intel's quality checks, because they do a basic random architecture test before shipping, rather than a full pathway test. Kinda like the difference between a short and long DST for a harddrive. It only checks random sectors rather than looking at each one sequentially, trying to find bad blocks. It's easy to miss minor errors if they're small enough.

Yes having 4.5ghz sounds sweet to us lowly 4.0's, but he shouldn't need to cook his CPU to get it to be stable either. Money is also a major factor in this economy, and believe me Intel is doing just fine as far as their CPU sales go. OC'ers are a TINY portion of their market. Most of their development and sales go to major customers like HP, Dell, Lenovo, and hundreds of others who buy enough CPU's annually to populate Canada.

Bottom line: Intel does sell lemons occasionally, and us OC'ers wanting the best CPU for our buck isn't gonna bother them too much.

Still think this is wrong. My 2600k won't do 4.8ghz no matter the voltage but I'm certainly not going to return it for being defective. The fact that one of these guys is suggesting you lie about the reason for return ought to be enough evidence that this kind of practice is wrong. People taking advantage of the rma process just makes the oem's/retailers that much more suspicious of legitimate returns, which hurts us all.

Don't worry. Intel makes good enough chips that the MOST of people will be happy with.
What would you do if your chip is only going to 4.0?
That's still 0.6 OC. I'd take advantage of RMA and give another one a try.
But obviously you'd keep the 4.0, right?
It doesn't matter what clock it is.
If you aren't satisfied, you have right to exchange it.

I would of sold it stating what it was and purchased another one. Like most of us have been doing for decades. Someone not wanting to OC would still have a perfectly fine chip. Instead of making the seller and maker go through all trouble of trying to satisfy someone who is not using the chip as it was intended. It's part of the risk you take to overclock. You pay to play. We should be thankful Intel even put out an unlocked cpu for us to tinker with. You know how they are with profit margins....

Sell it? Whos going to buy it? If I told you this "K" Overclocker doesn't overclock like it should, would you buy it? I don't think soo.... First off you would have to drop the price cause of its defect down to about $160, and that's already a lost of money in my opinion. My sticky theory still stands, I say RMA it back, *HE HAS THE RIGHT TO* <---Get it?

End of story, Like it or not. Take advantage of the rights that's given to you. Besides I think Intel would be a little less strict with their "K" SKU's knowing its unlocked. If your not going to overclock and worry about the company's wealth then buy the standard i5-2500 and stop whining like little baby's about RMA'ing a product when its clearly being provided as a right. THE END.
