Its more a thermal thing. LN2 then LHe will just cool progressively colder. Voltage is up to you, but bumping voltage too high will kill the chip at some point, every chip is different.

I wonder how non-xe sb-e will oc. It all depends on what baseclock intel releases them at, I suppose. If they keep them at 100 stock, even with a locked multi, a baseclock of 250 will net 8.3ghz on a 3.4 stock chip so they won't be artificially limited like 1155 sandys are. Only advantage of an xe would be 15mb cache, and higher bins. Hopefully we'll see them in 2011.

No amount of cooling will help. The chips will not reach those frequencies and will stop scaling with voltage way before you reach stuff like 3V...

so there's no point in figuring out theoretical max frequencies really

As i read it you'll be able to switch base clocks on all X79 mobo's so it just all depends on cooling.

Rumor has it Intel doesn't want Ivy Bridge to compete with its Sandy Bridge-E (socket 2011) platform, which is what would happen if Intel gave users more base clock options to play around with.

I'd imagine there would be enormous gaps between usable baseclocks though, so hopefully their multis are unlocked downwards.
