I have some 6.5" active speakers and they are a little on the big side. Even though they are big and spit out some bass, it's not that great for bass-heavy genres. If you at all listen to hip-hop, dubstep, or something with a bass beat to it you will eventually want a subwoofer. I have a 10" sub that I picked up and added it to the setup. It's a little overkill but it gets the job done.

I've been wondering about the best computer bedroom audiophile setup and I would recommend 4-5.25" monitors with an 8" sub. I think for the size and performance this is about the best compramise. I recommend passive speakers with an amp because:
1. you have the volume control in one place instead of on each of your active speakers
2. it's easier to turn on/off. I'm getting tired of turning the amps on each of my speakers.

I would get 2.1. Just personal preference just because I like my bass separate from sound from the speakers. At least for higher quality setups.
