S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky Low FPS?

Thread Starter
Ive decided to go back and try and beat stalker clear sky because its the only game in the series i haven't been able to play well. I've played all other stalker games just fine with very high or close to very high settings but when it comes to playing clear sky the FPS goes down the toilet. Anyone have any idea why this happens or why how i can fix this?
NOTE: THIS IS THE STEAM VERSION

Call of Prip should be more hardware intensive, and it's supposed to be a quad core game too, this doesn't make sense.

If you don't have the absurdly high load times then Steam's not running in Vista compatibility mode, which causes severe issues. So, that's a good thing

So I would have to make steam launch in compatibility with vista?
...I checked and it already was.
As far as load times, they are moderate. not really long but not too fast either. Also while loading the first intro clip, the sound was really off and not synced with the video.

No, that's what you want it not to do. It causes serious issues in Stalker, such as 20 minute load screens. It was discovered that for some reason many people who bought stalker through Steam had Steam running in Vista compatibility mode for an unknown reason, probably another game forced it, and it was causing issues.

If you have Steam in Vista Compatibility mode you should change that, if it's greyed out and you can't change it, do this.

Hit start->run->regedit
Go to key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
Look for a entry with your path to steam.exe
Delete that entry
If you dont find it there try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

Then relaunch Steam, check to see if the compatibility box is no longer checked, which mode it's set to doesn't matter, just make sure it's not greyed out and doesn't have a check either.

Edit - I should point out I'm talking about the Steam icon that you use as a shortcut, as we're talking about Steam itself, not STALKER.

The only game I have long load times with is CoP, and that's with the complete mod. Usually 2 minutes max. Mainly because of the mod, though.

I've thought of getting an ssd just for STALKER.

Clear Sky is just a difficult game to run in general. Try turning down Sun Rays. Also, that 260m isnt helping you much, since its desktop equivalent is around a 9800GT.

The absurdly long load time is a well known issue with Steam in Vista compatibility mode, it doesn't do this for everyone, but, it also causes other issues for some people.

After preventing Vista comp mode, my new game load time went from 24 minutes to 16 seconds, menu transitions went from 3 minutes to being instantaneous.

I'm seeing if Vista comp mode is creating other issues with his game, it has for some.

How do you disable it?
