XP more sensitive to overclock than 7?

Thread Starter
OK, this is a very peculiar issue I've been banging my head against the wall about for quite a while now.

My overclock is completely stable under Windows 7, but under XP I get weird lags and stutters (sound and video). My settings are as follows:

I am running a very mild overclock for the summer season. I was using a more aggressive one before, both were completely stable under 7:
vcore 1.38 (was using 1.5 during the winter)
ref 200
multi x17 = 3.4GHz (was using x19 = 3.8GHz in the winter)
NB multi x11 = 2200MHz
NB voltage 1.2
RAM 8-8-8-24-34 1T @1600MHz 1.5v
cpu temps 33C - 56C max load
Rig specs are in my sig.

I am 100% sure the lag/stuttering under XP is related to my overclock and not something else. I've reformatted multiple times with different XP copies/versions, installed all drivers and updates, run full virus scans (malwarebytes, super anti spyware, mse, combofix), defragged, ran ccleaner, etc.

When I reset all BIOS settings to default and reboot the stuttering goes away. I've tried changing one setting at a time back to default to find the culprit via process of elimination. My guess is it is related to the cpu overclock specifically.

I guess the point of this thread is to ask if anyone has experienced anything similar. I have absolutely zero problems under 7 and I am sure the overclock is 100% stable, ram is 100% stable (ran memtest +86 at boot overnight, ran IBT on very high, prime95 blend 24hrs). XP continues to give me problems unless I reset BIOS to default. Is XP just more sensitive to overclocking than 7?

I've never come accross that, and I run dual-boots of XP on the same rigs running 7. What happens if you stress test under XP? Sounds like a software issue.

Thanks for your reply. When I stress test under XP it also appears stable. I don't get any crashes or bsod. This leads me to believe you may be right about it being a software issue.

The reason I dual boot XP is for an older game; America's Army 2. When I try to play it under XP with my overclock enabled it lags and stutters. The cursor jumps across the screen, I get stuck and lag out, sound is garbled, etc. However, if I disable my overclock and return BIOS settings to default it plays fine under XP and said issues go away.

I can play the same game under 7 with my overclock enabled and I don't have any problems. I know it's not a driver conflict, virus or something like that because it goes away as soon as I disable my overclock.

I notice you're running an Intel build. Could it be related to the way XP handles the AMD 64bit cpu? The game I am playing is from ~2003 so I don't think it's multithreaded. It may be taking advantage of only one core under XP. Still, that doesn't explain why I get problems at 3.4/3.8GHz and not at stock 3.2GHz.

Never had any issues here. Same OC with both and same programs.

XP is somewhat more demanding on OCed PCs, but not in the sense that you are mentioning here... XP will bring CPU usage up to 100% at the moment it boots (when you see the XP Logo on the screen) so when one is pushing overclocks to the extreme the chances of the computer crashing at that moment are higher than if one were booting into Vista or 7... But once inside OS there should be no reason for it to be heavier on the CPU than any other OS... Unless you're loading tons of services/processes in the background. I too dual boot XP and 7 and have never had any issues with XP; although I only use it for some benchmarking programs and not regular daily use.

I'm not loading any background programs or services. I use the installation for playing one game only. The only things running at start up are my gpu/sound card drivers and wireless card drivers.

It's just really weird. As soon as I pump up the multi / vcore even a little bit my game lags out under XP. If I return it to stock it's fine. Under 7 it's fine either way.

You know what, that makes me think back to when I got my first dual core, it was an FX60 on Win XP. There were certain games that would stutter and skip, the problem was that the single thread was being swapped back and forth between cores. The solution was to alt/tab out of the game, ctrl/alt/del to bring up task manager, right click on the game .exe (or process) and choose "set affinity", then check a single core. As I remember, there was no way to automatically set this, you had to manually do it every time you started the game.

Hope that helps....don't know why it would not affect the non-overclocked setup. I run AMD as well as intel rigs BTW.

Did you apply the AMD Dual Core optimizer? I'm not entirely sure if it's even needed or the solution, but it's worth a try.

Otherwise, I have only seen the opposite, that people who'd have stable overclocks under Windows XP would have their PC crash booting into Windows Vista.

I think you guys might be right. Lack of proper multi-core optimization under XP might be at fault. I notice my cpu usage stays right around 25% (one core maxed out and very little on the other cores). The kind of behavior I'm seeing (stuttering, skipping mouse cursor, etc.) is exactly what happens on pcs running at 100% cpu usage. This still doesn't explain why resetting BIOS settings to default makes it go away though..

I will look into the "set affinity" setting / alt tabbing and the AMD Dual Core optimizer you mentioned. I will post back results.
