New Soundcard Now Need Headphones

Thread Starter
I've just been given a Asus Xonar D2 sound card and now need a new pair of headphones to go with it.

it will mainly be used for listening to music and playing games such as BF2, COD and WoW. I've been told by other people not to buy audio equipment from gaming companys as there usually rubbish.

what headset would you recommend for under £170

Cheers Sam

if you can spend an extra twenty pounds then you can grab the always excellent HD600's from Amazon UK, some of the best headphones around, if you can't stretch it then get the HD 598's and a clip-on mic from zalman

I bought cheapo senninhauser HD428( i think, closed ear design) for $80 and I havent been happier. I've actually become just a tad bit better at most of my games because they allow me to hear eberytin!

Do a lot of research and figure out what type you want. I'm guessing you want over the ear, do you want open or closed cup, heavy base or high highs, listening to music (I hope!), ect. There are a LOT of choices. If I had the money, I would've gone with these.

Learn about the sound you want to hear, then find the headphones that fit your needs. I would avoid "gaming" headsets, you can get a much better quality headphone for the same price without all the bling.

I have those 428's they are awesome, but not quite good enough for my tastes, I tried out some hd 650's at a crutchfield and I was amazed , although good, the ATH-900's are a little overrated

With the HD 598's how loud would it for surrounding people whilst I was using them?

nowhere near as loud as speakers, but still audible, probably about the same as if you crank up colsed headphones with them off your head, and you can still hear other people, but the advantages are worth it in quality

I'm going to try out the HD 598 in store next week too see if I like it.

What closed cup headphones would you recommend as well?

The Ultrasone PRO 550's suggested above by chinesekiwi are great. That said, traditional closed cans aren't really good for gaming because they don't have wide soundstages (the PRO 550 is an exception because it has what Ultrasone calls S-Logic technology that mimics an open headphone's soundstage).

Other than that, some closed cans with decent soundstages are Beyerdynamic DT770's and DT990's.

you will not be disappointed, but if you ever need closed cans the HD-25II's are excellent with a ton of isolation for DJ work
