Core2 E8400 @ 4.5ghz

post #1 of 2
Thread Starter
Been jacking around with my E8400 OC for the last few months. Today in increments I jacked up the Vcore to 1.44v with a multiplier of 9x500 = 4.5ghz.

Doing this on;
-Biostar TP35D2-A7 (i've heard this is a beginners OC board). Think I have the Gch n Mch at 1.35v (if I recall right). 8Gb OCZ memory at 2.0v

-Corsair H70 for cooling. Idles @ 40c (max temp under OCCT stress was 64c)

Validation Here:

Just did a quick OCCT test for only 30 minutes. Results came back stable.

Question is: Am I pushing this board n processor to far??? I've read that anything under 1.45v on this CPU is relatively safe. But I mean damn i've OC'd this thing 50% already

Also I'm gonna test this thing out for a full hour on OCCT. Is OCCT reliable or should I go Prime 95

I've heard of an E8400 being overclocked to 6Ghz on this site, so I wouldn't worry about pushing it too far. I don't remember what board they were using, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't yours. (not that there is anything wrong with your board afaik)

As far as stability goes, I'd run Prime95 for 24 hours (or at least 18) to ensure stability. Short runs like you have done are great for quick stability tests, but they don't give the full picture. If memory serves me correctly, Prime95 will start using some different algorithms somewhere around the 12 hour mark, so make sure once you start it (and your temp monitoring tool) you just let it run constantly. If you stop it at hour 10, you'll have to start it up again and wait another 12 hours or so before it switches algorithms. (Based on what I've read here on the OCN forums)

I've never tested with OCCT so I can't comment on that. Someone else who OC's more often than me will have to chime in.
