Okay today lights shimmered on/off for 5 secs. My htpc doesn't get internet. So I tried everything reinstalled drivers etc.. Wireless worked fine so i thought it was my htpc. Plugged usb wireless to htpc now its okay. But kept wondering is it my mobo that messed up, plugged the rj45 to my laptop dont get internet. Tried 4 different types of rj45 i had stored nothing no difference. Okay checked my sis desktop upstairs no internet as well, her mac gets internet through wireless. checked another computer same thing no internet. But every computer with wireless works completely fine. Tried reseting the modem and router no difference at all no internet throught rj45. What do you guys think the problem is? oh and once reset wireless still works.

Well, if you've tried multiple computers and couldn't get a wired connection, it would seem to be your modem or router.

Since you're getting access through wireless it would appear your modem works, which to me would narrow it down to the router.

You've tried all the different ports? Can you ping one PC to another through the router? or ping the router itself?

Sounds like the router is half dead.
Do you get link lights when you plug Cat5 in?
Have you tried holding the reset button on the router down for 10+ seconds to force it back to default?

Okay well my router and modem are located outside and then connected throught a hub or desktop switch forget which is what its called. then those wired go all over the house to go through each room. So I can check tomorrow with my laptop to see if being connected directly to modem works, then im going to check if being connected through router works and try each different port and ill report back. and yes when connected through rj45 lights do come on. It finds the conection and defines it as public but doesnt go through and says im not connect to internet (in network sharing center).

Okay this morning plugged directly to router I get internet. use the same rj45 to plug directly to the router, first says I get internet then stops and can't identify the network im in and no longer get internet. So my guess is that its the router. One thing if I hold the reset button would that mess with the (wireless) configuration I have in that router?

Yes, if you default the settings, it will be just like it was when you first got it. You will have to go back in and set up your wireless network again.

At this point however, I think it's your best bet to try and resolve the problem.

Okay tried a reset nothing happened. same thing only connecting through modem works, i also had another router that worked and it has the same problem. Wireless has become sluggish and wired does not work, even tried a splitter to modem to the rj45 in my wall to see if it was that and it worked. all points to router.
