Is a 6970 worth the extra dosh?

Hey everyone.

Just looking at getting a new GPU as I just sold one of my 5770s and the other was RMA'd and is now credit instore at Playtech NZ.

I am looking at either getting a 6950 or a 6970. I am upgrading to a single card as I am running two monitors and as you all probably know the second card doesn't kick in unless you are in fullscreen.

Both screens run at 1080p. One is a Viewsonic 24" and other is a Sony 32". The Sony is predominantly used for WMC.

I do a bit of gaming. F1 2010, MW2, Black ops, LFS, a range of NFS and Minecraft (lol not very gpu intensive).

It would be nice to have the Sony running WMC @ 1080p while being able to game on the Viewsonic with minimal lag. Leave the CPU out of it. Don't worry about that being a weaklink as I am planning an upgrade for that soon.

What would you recommend? 6950 or 6970? Is it worth the extra money? Is it still possible to unlock the 6950? Or are they all usually laser-cut or the shaders disabled another physical way?

Thanks!

Whats the price difference like in NZ between the two cards? Generally speaking, the difference between a reference 6950 that can unlock and a 6970 is so small that you might as well just buy the 6970.

None of the reference 6950s are in stock here in NZ which is a shame. I do like the look of the reference coolers.

The difference between a 6950 & 6970 is about $100NZ.

The reference 6950's that unlock are pretty hard to find now days in the US too and usually cost more than a regular 6950. I say just get the regular 6950 to save cash, overclock it and don't worry about unlocking it, and put that $100 you saved towards a second one for xfire down the road. The difference between an oc'ed 6950 and a 6970 isn't that big, but a 6950 xfire @ stock settings tools a 6970:

and doesn't fall that far behind a 6970 xfire:

I don't really wanna go crossfire down the road though. Although the extra $100 can go towards CPU and mobo upgrade. I really wanna keep just a single card as crossfire doesn't work until you go fullscreen.

Looks like I'll probably go for the 6950 though. Any particular brand and cooler stand out to you? Besides Asus.

Do you have a link to the store you'll be buying from so we can check out which models they sell?

lol darkraid..
Bro dont get the 6970, if you want to spend around 500 bucks you might as well get the 570 ay, they OC much better and are a hell of a lot faster once clocked properly. Thers a 6950 on trademe for 400 bucks. If u can try pick it up for like 350-360 bucks.

EDIT: ahhh just realised u got store credit from gaytech... (lol soz i really dislike that manager). How much store credit u got? If playtech is the only place you would purchase a card from then that 6950 will linked on the nz club will do i guess. Unlocking only yields around 5-10% performance max clock for clock so that shouldnt be a primary concern. Either way you will be satisfied with ur upgrade i hope

Yeah I've seen those two HIS cards on Trademe. Unfortunatelly I really have no choice but to get a new one from Playtech because of the credit. Not sure but I'm swapping a brand new 6770 they just send out to me as a replacement for my faulty 5770 so I'm hoping retail as it's brand new and un-opened. If they try to charge me a restocking fee... they'll know about it. lol.

MSI makes great dual fan cards. Their Twin Frozr II and III are will allow very high overclocks.

Stay away from XFX tho, as they are shady with warranty often denying warranty claims for false reasons.
