The Laptop Hunt

First let me say that this purchase will not take place till at least early September. I am just trying to get some research completed before the busy of fall semester sets in. I'd like to narrow down some candidates and go get my hands on them before making my final decision.

What is your maximum budget?
  • <$1800
What country are you in?
  • USA
What will be the uses of this laptop?
  • The laptop will be used mostly for web surfing, and office. Also might be doing some programming and web design. Possible some cpu intensive tasks or programs, but nothing like AutoCAD or video editing. No gaming plans.
Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
  • I am a sucker for quality. That being said, I'd like to focus on Lenovo, Apple, and Sager products. Not ruling others out.
What screen size do you require?
  • I'd ideally like a smaller screen to help with portability. Say in the 11" to 13.3". 15" would be okay though.
What screen resolution do you require?
  • Resolution doesn't matter to a certain extent. Quality of the screen itself takes precedence.
Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
  • New is the likely culprit, but I would not mind picking up something used or refurb as long as it has a warranty.
How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
  • No less than 4 hours preferably. Battery will be an important factor, but nothing extreme.
What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
  • N/A
What operating system do you need? (if any)
  • N/A. I am fine with any windows/linux/osx.
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
  • Build quality is probably the most important aspect of this purchase. Aluminum or black are preferred.
How much hard drive space do you need?
  • TBH I could get by on a 64GB SSD. Maybe less if I choose the linux route.
Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
  • An HDMI or DP out would be very nice. I am also not looking for an AMD machine with the exception of the Llano APU.
Is there anything else we need to know?
  • I plan on using this machine for at least two years. The needs for this machine do not merit that budget I have listed. The budget is mainly for build quality. I will be using this thing daily, and I want it to be a comfortable experience. I also extended to the budget to include room for a 15" MBP. It's just a beautiful machine, and I wouldn't mind ponying up for it. My top contenders right now are the 13/15" MBP, 13" MBA, Lenovo X1, X220, Sager NP5165, an honorable mention to the Samsung 9 Series. But take into considerations that most of this are more than I really need atm. If you can make a strong case for a ultraportable/netbookish machine please by all means let me know.

I would like to thank any/everyone in advance.

Since you're just using this for normal daily use, I would get the 128 13'' MBA with apple care. The only thing about this is the doesn't have DP or HDMI. But I would get this because it's the screen size you want, and it's more portable then the MBP. Battery life is 5 hours I believe, and it's got sandy. Or if you want Windows the Samsung 9 would be another choice. That's the closest thing to a MBA on windows.
