I just noticed something though. I can hear a really high frequency sound when I'm close to the case. Seems to be coming somewhere from the mainboard

As for degrading, these chips are very resilient. Just to give you an idea, back when i first threw my rig together in january i was using a TK FRIO heatsink and ran my chip at 5ghz at a whoppingly high 1.53v for a solid hour (to get into the club) temps reached close to 100c!!! Since then i have done numerous hours of testing in prime95 (easily over 200 hours) at various overclocks and voltage settings and the chip has shown no signs of degredation.

You will get different answers from different people on what is safe and what isnt, i know people who are running 5.0ghz and above at 1.4-1.5v from day one and have not seen any signs of degredation, even some crazy people running their chips at 1.6 to 1.7v
on suicide runs and STILL no signs of degredation.

Bottom line is, do what you feel comfortable with and just keep an eye on your temps, control your ambient as much as possible and let your hyper 212+ do the rest, you should be fine mate

After 7 months of nonstop use and rigorous testing my chip is still running at the lowest possible vcore for my clocks that i have ironed out. I have had no need thus far to increase my voltages for any of my clocks that i have deemed as 24/7 stable.

If you're using a asus board, it's prob the digi+vrm thing. Or it could be your PSU coil whining during load
