chipset cooling...

Thread Starter
hey i have this DFI x48 board lying around here. havnt used it in my main rig because havnt been bothered to swap it over.

always said when this one dies ill throw in that one.

but now gonna move to a 2600k or their abouts pretty soon. sort out my room ect. but anyway

i wanted to lean some overclocking ect on this board, atm it has the stock heatpipe cooler.. with a like 40mm fan. does alright i guess
but i carnt find a waterblock for it anywere...

i am going to get the RX360 kit and some nice. fans
and hopfully a universal waterblock to play with overclocking some gpus as well ( 9800/8800/4850 ect )

any ideas how to cool the chipset down?
with a e7400 @ 4.2ghz ( old core 2 quad stock cooler. stable at like 65 running benchies ) the chipset was hitting 70 - 75 is.. according to pcwizard..
but wasnt hot to the touch. so not sure how hot its getting idles like 40ish... give or take depending on the oc of course.

but i plan to get some pentium 4/celerons/EXXXX cpus to play around with and pretty much just learn how to oc and push these poor little chips untill they cry and a bit further.

i had a thought of mounting a smallish heatsink like this one with a custom mount of some sort so fits in... and then not sure for southbridge.. maby leave the stock one on their also and squeeze a smallish CPU heatsink on the northbridge chipset?

not to sure

Placing a small slow spinning fan on those passive heatsinks improves cooling to such a degree that you'll wonder why you haven't done this sooner. Some think active cooling on the chipset is so 2005, but now there are 80mm 1200RPM fans that make almost zero noise and don't cost very much.

Use HW monitor and report back with the temps. I cant believe that it is that hot and you cant feel it to the touch.

They dont get that hot that easily. Most of the x48 board didnt get to hot unless you had an nf200 chip on it.

That is usually the first thing that I do when I get a new board... Remove the stock thermal paste... One main reason: they apply wayyy too much of it in the first place
