Disappointed with Seasonic X-650

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

Just replaced my Fortron FSP300-60PN(PF) with X-650, to be room for future upgrades.
Fortron's power thought to be too low to the old ring, decided to add more W for future upgrades too. The fan noise is alright. Processor's fan was at 2200 RPM
X-650 runs at very low speed, sometimes the fan turns off. This made much heat in the case , the processor's fan speed goes beyond 4500 RPM.
Beside the heat, when i remove the side panel to let the air in, the PSU's fan stops, processor's fan speed decreases but a high/sharp and vey annoying noise is coming from the PSU, after a few minutes it stops and again starts..... all the time.
I went back with the Fortron and it is by far, much better.
This one:

While watching on line TV with X-650, the noise of it it was like being in the plane, Frotron no noise.
I have been in contact with Seasonic service in Holland and said to send it to them, but i rather send it back to amazon and get money back.
I want a 650W PSU, quiet fan, and also helping to cool the case too if possible.
I might get Antec Truepower New 650W, it is only half price compared with X-650 which i paid € 170.
I was thinking to try the Seasonic X-660W, but it might be the same as x-650.

I've used three Seasonic X650 and never had the problems you are describing. You may have just got a faulty PSU and Seasonic or Amazon will replace it for you.
The Seasonic is designed to not spin the fan under small loads and if your case gets hot, it's probably because there isn't enough airflow, looking at the Centurion, there's only a 80mm intake and a 120mm exhaust. Even when I tested the Seasonic and the fan was spinning, its noise is nothing compared to my GPU.

No PSU will help cool your case, that's not its purpose.

If you want to try other PSUs, check the Corsair HX(modular) or TX series.

If you're still inside your return policy time, return it to Amazon for a replacement. You probably just got a bad fan with the psu.

As a leading provider of silent power supply, Seasonic this time around delivers a true breakthrough solution for thermal and noise management. The X Series adopts a clever “Hybrid Silent Fan Control” design, which offers three distinct operation modes, fanless mode, silent mode, and cooling mode. The X automatically adjusts fan mode and speed according to the ambient temperature level. This brand new design not only optimizes heat dissipation, but also prolongs lifespan of the system by reducing unnecessary fan rotation. To make the X Series even more robust and exciting, Seasonic offers Sanyo Denki San Ace PWM Silent Fan on X, the best fan there is in the industry and taking advantage of the PWM feature.

http://www.seasonicusa.com/X.htm

If you want to replace it, then look at the Corsair TX650 or the XFX version.

Bad unit, RMA it mine doesn't make any noise involving the fan. Heck it hardly spins lol.

RMA it. I have the 750w version and I have to say, mine is COMPLETELY silent. Trust me, once you RMA it, you will be impressed by how quiet it is.

OP : You do realize your PSU is worth more than your rig right ?
The problem is heat then it's the case that doesn't do it's job.
Get a new case

Note : Heat determine if the fan start and stop, having your case open I guess the gauge gets hot and cold thus signaling your fan to start and stoping back and forth.

You are right, the PSU's value is higher than the ring. I had no plans to get a desktop ( happy with my XPS 16. i5 540).
I have got for free the case, videocard. mobo. Paid only for ram & processor €70.
I do not need any higher specs. If i need i could get it straight away. Just online TV I use it for.
I wanted the best PSU, no noise at all. I went with X-650 but did not work for me.
The PSU is gone back to Amazon. I have to get other one. I have to decide which one.
The noise was not coming from the fan, but for sure from inside of it.
The case, i like it very much. It has everything i need. The only thing i have to do is to get a 120 mm fan, make a hole on the side of the panel and it will be ok. It is only designed with two 80mm fans , front and back, but it is not enough.
This PSU I have pulls a lot of air inside the case, the system is cool enough, but I want to get a better PSU (more energy efficient)

The Seasonic X series are some of the most efficient PSUs,

If you want, you can try their fanless PSU : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151097
it's 400W and Gold Rated.

Otherwise, look at the Corsair AX, HX, TX series. Those are good PSUs also

That said, the benefit of these PSUs will only matter if you have your PC on long hours everyday and if your electricty cost is very high. It will take several years of constant daily use to actually 'save' the 170 Euros you're paying for it over sticking with your current PSU.
