Is this a hard drive problem?

Hi OCN Community!

I encountered a problem with my PC:

My monitor suddenly goes black screen and display shows "No Signal", but the fans in my chassis are still working.

This happened to me twice, once I was playing Civ V and another while playing Dragon Age 2.

I told this to one of the technicians of my retailer and he thinks the culprit is a bad sector in the hard drive.

I remembered that my PC was plugged off by my mom several times, when she thought it was turned OFF but I was just downloading overnight while the monitor is turned OFF.

Pfft... And I just read that improper shut down may cause bad sector on hard disk.

Anyway, I forgot the "tool" that the technician advised me to use to check and repair bad sectors, any ideas?

Or do you think the problem lies elsewhere?

I already tried the Win7 built in hard drive tool to check for errors but the HD is fine.

I'm kind of new to troubleshooting, so sorry for sounding noobish, hehe..

Thanks in advanced!
Toto

I may be wrong but i'd go with powersupply or overheating, doesnt sound like a hard drive problem. More likely it would just hard freeze or blue screen if it was hard drive.

Sounds like it's more likely what cazanon said or a video card problem.

tried using onboard graphics?

Sounds like a GPU issue to me.

Running S.M.A.R.T at boot will check for bad sectors (although I don't think it's the problem) as will this*

*the link is to Microsoft for Vista but it's the same for Win 7

When I was using the on-board graphics, I didn't have any problems.
I forgot to mention:

I OCd to 3.75GHz (stock at 3.0GHz) with 250MHz clock and vCore of 1.425v.

Could it be overheating problems?
I usually encounter this at night and much cooler ambient temps.

If this is a GPU prob, any advise on how to isolate the prob to confirm it?

Thanks for the replies! Keep it coming!

Never OCd GPU but I accidentally clicked the "Enable AMD Overdrive" so the padlock is unlocked.
Never adjusted anything though, I was already satisfied since it lets me play ultra high settings.

Hmmm... I'm not sure how to test a video card, but if you have onboard graphics, try taking out your GPU and just running the onboard graphics and see if the problem stops.

Well, the problem only occurred twice, playing GPU intensive games.
I couldn't run Civ V and DA2 with max settings with iGPU.

I was thinking a good stress test for the GPU might work?

Have other ideas on how to isolate?

You could try running a GPU stress test... Maybe it's overheating.
