HD problem......Can I fix?

Thread Starter
I have recently set up a spare comp for my 7 year old son play some video games. Yesterday I came home from work to find it will not boot. I just keeps saying that the "BOOTMGR is compressed press ctrl +alt +del to restart." I am wondering if there is any way to decompress, or am I just gonna have to reformat the HD.

What OS, and do you have the install disc?

Heh, I found an easier way to fix this, and registered just to tell you, ><.

Boot from the Vista DVD.
Click 'Repair my Computer'
At the prompt to select your OS installation, click the button that says 'Load Drivers'. This should bring up a explorer-style drive browser.

Then just right-click on the drive you tried to compress, and deselect 'Compress this Drive', which should still be ticked on. Hit apply, and apply to subfolders/files.

Reboot.

Fixed it for me in a hurry, hope this helps someone else.

I have vista 64 on that PC. I will have to look for the disc, it has been a while since I have even had that one turned on.

Depending on the operating system of course, you could take the drive out and put it in a different machine and check the drive for errors, if it checks out ok, copy a fresh BOOTMGR over. That should fix it....if the hard drive isnt dead.

Maybe the HDD is dead? You mention its 7 years old. OMG never mind, i cant read.

Does the BIOS see the HDD? If it does, hook it up to an IDEor SATA adaptor to USB, and on your main PC, copy the old HDD and put in a new one?

If its and HDD problem at all.

How come you can't boot from disk?
I think i know whats happened here, its happened to me a few times. You need to take the hard drive out and put it into another machine, then copy new version BOOTMGR over to it.
Sometimes the BOOTMGR gets corrupted or just plain refuses to work on vista, this happened to me on my old laptop, i took the drive out and put it in my main rig. Copied over the BOOTMGR file from my main rig over to the laptop drive and it booted up perfectly again.

it is, a sata hdd?

if it is, try boot it up in your main pc?
if doesnt boot, try to use as another drive to your main, and copy the stuff to a new HDD.

in bios, whats the boot order? whats the sata configuration? did you try different sata/ide ports?
