[FSB] Skype for iPad withdrawn within hours – why?

Quote:
Skype’s long-awaited official app for iPad was released today, only to be pulled from the Apple virtual store within a few hours. Already beaten to the finish line by Fring’s video-calling iPad app, it seems that Skype jumped the gun for their own app’s release.

Skype have apologised via their Twitter account, explaining that “Skype for iPad… went live prematurely.†No further clarification of the reasons for the app’s withdrawal was given, nor has a new release date been established at the time of writing.

Conspiracy theorists might like to debate how Microsoft’s ownership of Skype will influence Apple’s chances of a smooth launch.

Of course it can't be for the reason given, it must be some deeper problem.

yep, Skype didn't give too much information on what the problem was specifically. They just said it was released prematurely.

What about Viber ? (Does the same thing and no need to sign up, just put in your number) It is on Android and iPhone, though I do not know about the iPad.
I use Tango, it also doesn't require a username/password and works so much better than Viber. I was able to video chat with my cousin all the way in Russia while connected to 3G and the quality was great, it does work much better over wifi though.

Viber had video freezing and audio delay when I tried it a few times.

No need to worry, Skype is available in the app store for the iPad again. I'm looking at it right now.

Wait Apple is going to allow Skype to compete with its own application (iFace or is it Facetime)? Slap me thrice and hand me to my mama. I guess they can't just yank the app off the store and then make their own version later and sue the makers of the original this time.

All joking aside I wonder how they could "prematurely" release a program. They make it sound like some guardian of the program feel asleep on the job and let the program escape.

Skype has been around for the iPhone for a while now.

Seems like it was something small that made them take it down because it wasn't down for very long. I think the software does look nice and I'm glad that there's a good alternative for video calling on the iPad now.

Thanks. I will try that one out. Viber had been crashing on me lately anyway.

Good to know. I was not sure if the phone and pad had shared the same store or if they had to re approve/re write the applications for the pad for compatibility.
