Pirates wouldn't be able to go online anyways just like BFBC2. This online pass is just greedy.

Last time I check people were still allowed to sell things they truly own.

The game companies are crybabies and need to realize everything is affected by trade.

For the love of god just visit eBay.

... what? This scheme has existed in PC games for ages

You don't "truly own" it. You license software. Go read up on it Doesn't matter what you think, that is the fact of the matter

And yes, gaming servers ARE expensive to run. It's not just "oh, here's a new nick to enter." They have to process and serve the games up for everyone playing.
TLDR version: used game sales don't add to server load

THink about it... if I have used the online code, and sell the game to XYZ... I'm no longer using that server. XYZ is using the server in my place, and just has their own nick entry.

The net difference is EA gets more money for a nick DB entry/profile

Now, if we could only buy the online pass and not require a disc... how many discs do you think they'd really sell...

Not true, because your info still remains in their servers taking up space.

I don't care as long as I get to play multiplayer without paying extra when I buy the game first-hand

I mentioned that. see 'just another nick profile DB entry.' How big might an entry be? 10 MB? There's lots you can store referentially in 10 MB.

Space is cheap, even on enterprise level hardware. Worst worst case maybe $4/GB ( 10Gb SAN 48x2TB raid 1+0 44TB for $156K ~= $3.50/GB )

As for the DB access being slow due to 'millions' of records: if they (EA) don't know how to engineer a solution for this they would have the a db problem due to bad design no matter how things were sold.

meh, people should have to buy there own copy of the game. stop whining about not getting a free copy of the game from a friend. They put the time and effort into making the game. They aren't milking anything, only cutting down on piracy.

So would this be like buying a used car and then having to buy a pass from the OEM to be able to drive it on the road?

For the love of god, the average consumer needs to start understanding that server upkeep has multiplied 10 fold in the last 5 years and it's no longer 100$ a year to run a server.

The average consumer also NEEDS to realize that operating those servers takes man-time, hardware upgrades and fiscal responsibilities BEYOND primary ownership.

I completely agree with EA on this front...If you want to play on-line and you're second hand, buy a pass and deal with it.

Your bandwidth on their server costs money, regardless how small, you should contribute JUST as the primary owner did.
