Will high res affect CPU bottlenecks?

Thread Starter
I have a 960 stock, not sure if I should go ahead to overclock, as I plan to hold off on a new cooler + mobo + cpu until Ivy bridge comes out, and if the CPU isn't goin to be a bottleneck its fine.

But I plan to game at 5670x1080 with 580 3Gb Sli on a i7960 stock, will the higher res prove to be a bottleneck in games like BC2, etc.?

cpu dont work much harder when you up the res, only the gpu.

of course it takes a little more cpu power, but you would be surprised at how little a difference 720p, and 3x 1080p are on cpu load.

even when you use a tiny res like 800x600, your cpu still has to calculate lots of stuff thats offscreen,
at least, thats what ive found my experience in heavy cpu games like bad company 2 and gta iv

also just so you are aware, all half decent p67 and z68 mobo will support ivy bridge,

your cpu should be enough to keep 60 fps and ludicrous resolutions.

That said sli 580 3gb is 1000 dollars minimum. If I had that much gpu power, I would want a very powerful cpu, which stock 960 really isnt. Its good, but not sli 580 good

Using higher RES eats less resouces from the CPU.

I would post a article here but i cant remember where is saw it.

Only way to know if you are having bottle is watching you GPU load, if both dont load up to 99% than you have a bottle neck, be sure to have VSYNC off. Otherwise you might get 60 fps with less gpu load, like 60% or 70%.

EDIT: Lex_Luger, he said he is waiting for Ivy Bridge to upgrade.

yeah, doesn't seem right having a sli 580 set up with just stock speeds 960

At higher resolutions more of the load is shifted to the GPU from the CPU.

You can tell you have a CPU bottleneck when your CPU is at 100% but your GPU isn't.

ultra-high res makes everything GPU limited.
