used to be the case with floppy drive ("floppy tehe gigidy") so i think until something comes along that is cheaper, smaller, has more capacity and is faster than a DVD/CD it won't change again, and even then we'll still be using CD's DVD's and Blurays for something. Maybe flash memory? The sort you used to get in a phone (i only say used to because i have an iPhone). But I think the technology isn't there yet and because everyones happy with disc's why change?
Although could you immagine that? no moving parts atall! SSD and Flash Memory interface STANDARD!! obliviously atm everyone uses HDD for storage because SSD's are too expensive but in theory it could be silent (apart from the fans/cooling ofcourse)
