Yes the quality will change. MP3 isn't lossless like FLAC even if you use LAME.

I doubt optical media is going away any time soon, especially considering some internet companies want to cap our internet plans.

I prefer optical media, and always will.

I don't like how many people are starting to rely too much on streaming, cloud, etc. It is starting to replace everything, especially books. What happens if for some reason your account gets hijacked, or if it has problems, or any similar matter? I think you should at least have some things that are physical, like books, dvds, etc. so that if something does go wrong, what ever it might be, you have a physical version, so you will be covered. I know problems would be rare, but better safe than sorry .

Indeed. It would take about 1,200 Mbit/sec for 8-bit 1080p.

I don't have/use a optical drive in my main sig rig. Although, I do have one on my server. If say for example I buy a CD, I just rip it onto it's hard drive, then transfer it to my sig rig. Works out nicely till I buy a game with securom.

Broadband services will have to change their policies and quality of service in order for streaming services to fully replace physical media. With growing trends of higher resolutions and add-ons like 3D it would be hard for streaming media to catchup with the limitations and restrictions from broadband.

I guess I would like to see more rental services and devices that downloads higher quality movies to a localized buffer to watch later kind of like iTunes with more flexibility.

"The Obsolete Man" from The Twilight Zone. Granted I kind of cheated to find the exact name, but I remembered enough to find it with relative ease.

What? Optical drives obsolete? Hogwash.
My PC still has a floppy drive and I view optical as very futuristic. DVD & Blu Ray is wayout stuff and don't have those.

Next, you'll be telling me my Franklin Ace 1000 backup PC is obsolete.....
DON'T YOU DARE!!!!
