1333 or 1600 for overclocking

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I have an i5 750 overclocked to 3.6ghz using 4gb DDR3's (2x2gb sticks) at 1333mhz, I was wondering if my current setup is bottlenecking my oc, and if so, would 1600mhz be a better option.

I was also wondering if it would be viable to overclock the ram itself...

I appreciate your help.

The simple answer for your current set up: no. In one sense RAM always bottlenecks the CPU (regardless of the OC): that is why large L3, L2 and L1 caches exist on-chip. Certain apps/benchs fare better with faster/tigher RAM, but overall for gaming it does not make that much of a performance difference to go from 1333 to 1600. RAM can be overclocked (check my sig system); it is (or maybe I should say "was once") commonly done to maximize RAM performance given the base clock needed for a CPU OC.

Even if he gets the 1600 and his mobo supports it, it's just going to downclock to 1333 because of the processor. But the 1600 would OC better since you'd be starting with headroom
