I5 2500k good for not so much gaming? - Page 2

The best thing is that your q9650 will be an even trade for a new 2500k and a few extra bucks too boot.

Yeah, but like he said, he does very little gaming and it already sounds like he's satisfied with his current gaming performance.

Maybe I might have skimmed and missed it, but you ask us if it's a good CPU and then tell us nothing about what you want to go faster?

If it's just windows performance and multi-tasking get some good RAM and a solid-state drive.

Edit:

I do a lot of multitasking photoshop, dream weaver, 2 or so browsers with 20 or so tabs which take more ram than CPU though? the usual msn etc. At one time, I do encode video from time to time but not frequently and I do very little gaming

Didn't read, but that's what happens when I stare of a blob of words. A good processor sure helps with Adobe software and such but what it sounds like you need is 8+ GB of ram and a solid-state drive as I said before.

That chip is still very good and can handle any single gpu out there. If you feel it's slow, go for the upgrade. You can always wait for ivy bridge(march 2012 i think).

I didn't feel that my E8400 was slow, but yet I still feel that upgrading to the 2500K was the best move I have ever made.

Thanks for reiterating that, due to the unnecessary length of my post I assume people are skimming! Haha, thanks so much for the detailed reply.

Then the "just stick with what you have" option can still be left on the table IMO.

Would a 2500k be better, sure.
Would it make an earth shattering difference for using some of the a/m software, not really.
