Anyone tried HDD for OS and SSD for..

Hi just wondering how would performance be if I installed the OS on the HDD and the games and apps on the SSD be versus the norm of installing the OS on the SSD and the games and apps on the HDD?

The apps would wear down the SSD faster, but in the event of failure the OS would be protected on the HDD.

Do you think it's worth this protection or should I just get a small SSD for the OS and stick with installing games on the HDD.

Pretty bad idea. Hard drives are much more likely to fail than SSDs anyway so I don't understand your reasoning.

Hm.. I've always had the impression even though there are no moving parts that HDD were still more reliable in terms of longevity with reading and writing.

Well I guess I'll take your word that SSDs are less likely to fail.

Reliability

"In terms of reliability, conventional HDDs pale when compared to SSDs. The absence of mechanical arms and spinning platters is the reason behind its reliability. Under normal wear and tear, you can expect about 10 years from your SSD.

Unless if you pull something silly like me and make a mistake by forgetting to move the Temp folder on a Windows Media Center machine, THEN you'll kill your SSD a lot quicker. My 64GB Mushkin will be dead by the end of the year:



This is after a ton of Temp read/writes by the system while watching TV...

Whereas my Corsair 120GB in my primary work laptop still has a number of years to go - with normal "business" usage for about 14 hours-per-day:




I'd still just go with the conventional route and get the biggest SSD you can afford for your OS and games / apps. Run a short-stroked mechanical RAID-0 array if you need a bit more performance elsewhere.

Granted SSD's are in every way better then an HDD even size and heat generation.

But a SSD will run you 2-3x the cost of a HDD
and for normal use I think the HDD is still gonna be a little better
I've been using the SAME WD 160gb PATA drive since 2002(with NO signs of death)
and my C: is a WD 80gb Caviar from 2006< and no problems there either.

BUT if it was for a Laptop/toughbook or other small device like that I'd say SDD ALL THE WAY. since they see more heat, shock and vibrations then any Home PC would EVER see.

I've seen threads where people get 60 or more terabytes out of a SSD . You should look into doing a comprehensive format, something to reset every bit to 0 and you will add mucho longevity to your SSD. For the life of me, I can't remember what it's technically called. I do know some of anand's ssd articles have what it's called.

I know there has been a lot of hype about failing ssds, but they are still a tech in it's infancy. Considering that though, there is less of a percentage of failed ssds vs hdds.

If your worried about losing data, keep everything on two (raid 0 or more) hdds because they are cheaper. Data redundancy is the best form of protection agaisnt loss. Keep everything important to you on the raid config and use the ssd for your primary OS/app drive. Applications and OSes can be re-installed, where as some data cannot be recovered.
