Maximus IV E-Z not starting properly...

Hello everybody!

Today I received my ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z, and I started work on my first solo rig. After installing the CPU, Fan, and RAM, I plugged in the 24pin connector and the supplementary 8-pin CPU power connector (even though four of them were covered, the instruction booklet seemed to indicate little difference between plugging in all eight and just four)

Now, I realized a little bit too late that the Extreme-Z doesn't have an onboard display ouput (d'oh), and I haven't picked up my graphics card yet, so I tried to start it up without a graphics card plugged in - I figured that this was a viable option, since the booklet designates that there is a "No VGA" speaker tone that will sound in such an event (obviously, the one I expected to hear).

After switching the power supply on, the Start, Reset, ROG and CMOS LEDs on the Motherboard turned on - for some reason the CMOS LED was orange. After turning off all the switches as the booklet suggests, I decided to hit the Start button. The fan on the CPU began to run, but quit after about a second, and no tone came from the speaker.

Now, I'm sitting here telling myself that the reason it didn't start is because it requires some sort of display or graphics card to be plugged in, but I'm seriously starting to think that I might have done something very wrong.

I made sure to put it together on a non-conductive surface, made sure to touch my case to alleviate static... are there any other factors that might've messed it up?

Sounds stupid but did you plug the speaker into the Q-connector on the board?

I forgot to originally and also thought mine was messed up.

I plugged the speaker into the set of pins that had "Speaker" printed directly beneath them. And even if I hadn't put it into the right port, that wouldn't explain why everything else refuses to start up, or why the CPU fan quits after a few seconds.

Maybe it has something to do with the GPU not being connected.

The computer knows there is no display adapter and that could be the reason why it won't work.
