When you installed the Hyper 212 Plus, did you apply paste in between the pipes on the base of the heatsink first?

I'm just thinking that 80°C is a bit high for that voltage, so maybe there isn't enough thermal paste. Or there may not be enough physical pressure (it might not be screwed down tightly enough).

However, when you get 80°C, what speed do you have the fan at? Do you have just one fan, or 2 (push/pull)?

I hit 86*C with my Xiggy at 1.42v using Prime95. At 1.38v I hit around 80*C.

My theory (just that, a theory):
When we switched to 32nm, I think that maybe the actual die on the CPU is smaller than previous CPU's were. So I'm thinking that we might only be touching 1 of the heatpipes to the part of the CPU that matters, instead of all 3 of the heatpipes (or partial touching of the outer 2). So we're focusing all that heat, and its only using a few of the pipes instead of all of them.

Again, just a theory. But normally the CM212+ / Xiggy, modded with push / pull + shrouds will beat the Corsair A50 / Scythe Mugen 2. But with SB chips, the flat base coolers just walk all over the HDT coolers. So that's my theory at least, take with it what you want.

Holy crap. This makes me really glad I chose the Frio instead of the 212+ (it was a toss-up for me). My maximum temp with Prime95 Blend so far is about 72°C with 1.392V to 1.400V (it flip-flops).

I'm just gonna take a quick stab at this, but would one of your theories be the die locations?

Because I had read a while back, that direct contact cpu coolers, will have varied effectiveness, depending on which cpu your using.

With my Xiggy....I have 2 Delta 153 CFM fans on it (with a shroud), and I load at 80*C at 1.38v. 86-87*C with 1.40v or so (give or take). I've mounted and re-mounted....it makes no difference at all. It's NOT the application, its the CPU not getting full contact.

The Frio is a MUCH better cooler for SB, so you got a good one. I'm just dealing with the temperatures (as soon as my board comes back), and I'm saving to go full custom water and say the heck with temps.

Hypothesis vs Theory

As for mobo changing, higher quality parts can potentially lead to a better OC. With SB, however, it's mostly CPU dependent.

I agree. Is it that hard to accept that sometimes you'll get a buffalo chip instead of a golden chip?

The Z68A-GD65 is not "lower end (ish)" by any stretch of the imagination unless you only swear by Maximus IV Extremes and Big Bang Marshals. It's squarely in the mid-range. If an i5-2500K doesn't want to do 4.5 at a reasonable voltage on it, I don't think it matters what motherboard it calls home.
