800D Question

Thread Starter
Ok so im saving up for a 800D which I plan todo some modding on and a few things I'd like to know are. 1.Can the hotswap cage/holder be removed? 2.Whats the size of the hole where the hot swap door is? 3.Would it be possible to add a color lcd to display system stats and be hidden by the door if needed and 4.how could i power the display? 5.will it bring my fps down if i add it to my graphics card?

I'm sorry if this seems like alot

1: yep - get that dremel though
2: that I don't know
3: depends on the LCD screen that you want - some can be connected to the internal USB and a 4 pin molex, others to the graphic card but it requires some weird connection, other users here might know more about the latter. But to hide it behind the door, i don't think that's possible (without some very imaginative modding) as the door in not as wide as the 5 1/4 bay.
4: see above

Again, you can't find a LCD screen fitting in there as they are all designed to fit in 2 or 3 5 1/4 drive bay. The LCD would have to be partly hidden behind the door (as the screen is wider and most likely longer). You could fit it above the door though, in the regular drive bays. Be warned though, if you opt for the internal USB connection, the configuration of those screen requires some fancy coding and macros, it can be a real pain.

Oh, and why not get a 700D instead of the 800D if you do not plan of keeping the hot swapable bay anyway. You could cut a hole out of the front panel yourself to fit your LCD screen. Just a thought.

Hey Grandreaper

The size of the hole of the hot swap drives is about 2cm less than an normal 5.25 inch length wise.about 122mm?
and the full height is about 153 mm
you can use a dremel to cut out and make it the same size as a 5.25 inch drive bay but it will require quite some work.

Hope that helps ^^

The exact size of the hard drive door section without the door in the slot is 150mm across and 168mm high.

With some modding you should be able to get some decent clearance between the front cover and the actual case, you'll need to remove some "lips" around the edges of the metal though. That wont be an issue with a dremel however.

Thanks everyone this all helps a lot. And i think i might go with the 700D and tell everyone its a 800D for the fact that I never need hot swap bays in my main rig and i can add a window myself. as for a LCD if I don't add one to the front i might go with something like this this. http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=27886 It can change to white and green which are the colors i plan to go with. And I don't think I've said this but I plan to get my case powder coated White with Black & Green accents.

Anyway what do you guys think? would you go 700 or 800? custom screen or 5.25 bay?

go with the 700d because you can just cut out the exact amount you need for a lcd screen and you have the freedom of putting it wherever you like instead of being restricted the hot swap section. I have the 800D and i don't actually like the window that much also so you can cut whatever type of window you want on the 700D.If you go with the 800D, you can buy a non window side panel and cut it whihch is what i wanna do but my dremel broke lol.
Good luck with your mod!
Hope to see a build log aswel.
In the future im going to mod the crap out my 800D ^^

For what you've planned I would definitely go with 700D. You could install a 5:1/4 LCD screen by cutting a section out of the front panel, below the drive bays. You might even be able to fit it without removing the HDD cage.
