Upgrading my Home Theater Audio

post #1 of 58

Hey guys.. I'm getting a little tired of the lack of sound from my current setup. I have an older Pioneer Receiver (about 7 years old) that is starting to go out so it's time for an upgrade. I have the receiver coupled with some Yamaha 5.1 satellite speakers. It sound great (to me) when I first bought the setup 7 years ago but I've recently added a Vizio sound bar in my bedroom and the highs and midrange sound much better from the cheap bar frown.gif.

I'm looking for bang for the buck here. Doesn't have to the best, cause honestly I'd probably notice little difference between Good and The Best.

I'm looking at this set. For all 5 speakers it would cost all of $255 and it has EXCELLENT reviews on Amazon. I would continue to use my Yamaha Sub for the time being.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-CN5000-Center-Channel-Speaker/dp/B000OGA81Q/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_b"]Sony SS-CN5000 Dual 5.25" Center Channel Speaker[/ame]

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-8-Inch-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B000OG88KY/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_c"]Sony SS-B1000 5 1/8-Inch Bookshelf Speakers[/ame]

I had looked at some comparable Polk Audio's but they would be closer to $500 and I honestly don't know if it would be worth the extra money for me.

Any recommendations on a good receiver in the $250-300 range?

Speakers seems pretty decent, if you are looking for a good movie/gaming experice that is. for receivers look at Onkyo at that price, they ain't bad at all, probably the best receivers for that price.

I pair of bookshelf speakers, a decent sub, will blow away any HTiB you can imagine to include those wack Sony speakers. If your going to upgrade do it right. You can buy the receiver, pair of speaks, then just keep adding. In the end you will be happier and have a much better setup.

In your budget and will destroy that Sony setup completely with better depth and clarity.

Yea I priced that exact system out when comparing to the sony's. I guess if I'm going to do it I might as well do it right huh.

Someone on another board pointed me to the Onkyo Jamo package on tigerdirect. Are Jamo speakers any good?

Well I know the Polk stuff is top notch but I'm trying to not break the bank too much.. The Jamo setup includes 5.0 speakers and an Onkyo receiver for $419 though..

Dont get Pioneer for Polk speakers. Unless you spend the money on Pioneer Elite.
Get a Onkyo, Denon, Harom Kardon receiver.

That whole Polk set from newegg is fantastic. I have polk speakers and a Denon AVR-1611. Speakers are important, and so is the receiver.
