Asus 6970 WC Rendering Problems.

Thread Starter

I've got my water cooling working pretty well for my cpu. It's running nice and cool and quiet. So I got the bright idea to add my

to the loop, because the blasted thing idles at 50c, and ramps up to around 80c with its stock air cooler when gaming.

I put the full cover waterblock on it and add it to the loop, it's running a much better 32c load, but when it is rendering 3d it outputs the right image here (left image is how it looks air cooled) Those are the starfield in Starcraft2, but it does it for all 3d games. Additionally there are flashes and flickers of vertical lines of varying thickness.

I put the air cooler back on, and it goes back to rendering things like normal, graphics look like they should. I put the waterblock back on and it starts rendering like an idiot again.

Any insight on why I can't have the best of both worlds?

Card works fine with stock cooler,so you clearly have something going on with water block. Either you got some contacts between PCB and block or block warps your card somehow and kills signals. Is card warped with waterblock?

Also, contact KL support and ask them whether they have any ideas.

I bought it here
http://dazmode.com/store/index.php?m...oducts_id=1102

But under your advisement I looked over at koolance's website, and where the daz page doesn't mention this, koolance says the block is for reference layouts only. I didn't have any trouble attaching the block, so my guess is the misfit is something not touching.

If I'm off on this assumption, let me know. Otherwise I'll have to hawk the koolance and try and find a compatible one elsewhere.

Edit: I was poking ek's website and their configurator says the Asus cards use the standard waterblock, and not the V2's? So I'm getting mixed signals from different companies.

I noticed lately, that lots of these 6950 cards got 6870 PCB design.
Do post photo of your card, so we can see what it looks under the hood.
It will be easier to tell you what to get.

Are you putting thermal pads on the tiny vrms? You can see where they are from the EK Reference picture which already has the pads on them. Looking at the EK picture also notice that there's a thermal pad on the top left of the PCB as well.

That is 6970 reference for sure. Have you covered all areas as instructed per manuals?
Does any of pads look like it hasn't got an imprint on it?

When I first put the waterblock on, and took it off to check imprints, there was a lack of connection with the two little guys above the two long white chip things on the right, but I doubles up padding and got a connection there. I followed the instructions pretty carefully (or at least what I perceive as such). But the problem occurs insantly the moment I boot up a game, could it be overheating that quickly, and would heat be causing that problem with the rendering? Is there a specific area I should be checking in particular for this problem? ie RAM, or one of those little silver dudes?

Edit:
And to Big Elf, it did come with a 6970 specific chart for pad layout, which I followed very carefully. There's a little pad for that black block in the upper left.

The EK piccie might be helpful. I'm wondering if doubling up the pad thickness means that some areas are not being adequately covered as the block might not be pressing down enough to make good contact.

All the pads are showing contact marks, and the thermal paste looks fine. I tried different tightnesses on the screws.
