Asus 6970 WC Rendering Problems. - Page 2

What TIM are you using on the GPU by chance? Also, I'm not sure why Koolance has V1.1 for their 6970/6950 waterblocks now. They don't say what the revision is for.

I'm using the gray pads where it suggests here.

And it came with a little packet of white thermal paste also, which I'm using for the vid processor itself.

I wouldn't be able to tell you which revision I'm using.

Would the issue be caused by the processor? Or the ram? Or... what? Haha...

I have noticed the more I spend time around it (with the case open) that the card is making a sound that sounds like the Silence of the Lambs guy Ftftftftftft! when a game is running.

Some cards will make sounds when 3d programs like games are loaded. As for the issue you have, it could be the block or the card to tell you the truth. My brother-in-law had issues with his 6990 artifacting with an EK and Koolance waterblock, but worked fine with stock cooler. It ended up being the card itself, as he swapped the video card and the second works fine. I could not determine what was the card's issue with using a waterblock. Artifacting is mainly from the GPU itself IMO. Also, he had issues with the pink soft 1.0mm thermal pads. When you remove the waterblock, do all the thermal pads have imprints in them? I have the EK waterblock and it use .5, 1.0, & 1.5 mm thermal pads.

CCC is reporting 30-32c for the gpu (it doesn't seem to show any info on the temps of the other components), so I'd imagine the thermal paste is doing its job. Looking at the little gray thermal pads, they all have indents where they should be touching components.

Run GPU-Z and monitor temps. Run Kumbustor and then see if GPU or VRM temps skyrocket. You can graph the temps in te background while Kumbustor, Heaven benchmark or 3Dmark11 is running. If the cards is bad, good luck getting a version reference 6970 card. They stopped making them a while back. Not saying the card's is bad, just giving u a heads up.

Ran it for a while and in GPU-Z and the four gpu temps never went much above 46c, and when they did it was as a whole. The voltage reg temp stayed right around 30.

But the problem occurs insantly the moment I boot up a game, could it be overheating that quickly, and would heat be causing that problem with the rendering? Is there a specific area I should be checking in particular for this problem? ie RAM, or one of those little silver dudes?

Edit:
And to Big Elf, it did come with a 6970 specific chart for pad layout, which I followed very carefully. There's a little pad for that black block in the upper left.
You don't need any thermal pads on those two.

It sounds like you've got a short, flexing the pcb somehow. Have you checked it for straightness with the block on?

There are 2 different "reference" layouts for the 6970, the one you posted a picture of would be what Aqua Computer calls the type 1 layout.
Aqua Computer actually makes 2 different water blocks for the 6970.

It doesn't look like Koolance lists any specifics for which "reference" PCB layout their block fits.

Koolance suggests they do, in step 3 on the far left group, the top right of the three pads.

It could be bowing or flexing on the board, but it's hard to tell if it is, so it can't be doing it too hard. I may have to get one that's specifically made for this card and hope it works.

Well, if you want to try another waterblock, I do have an EK 6970 reference design block.
