Mixing RAM - 2 different DDR2 800 kits

Thread Starter
Right my board is doing my head in at the moment

I've got 2 sets of 2x2GB DDR2 800 kits

1 is Corsair XMS2
1 is OCZ Platinum

Both sets work fine

Both are DDR2 800, but my board refuses to POST with both sets in. It also refuses to POST in dual channel mode with a single set, only firing up in single channel mode.

A few questions then....

Will the two sets work together?

Do I have a potentially dead set of RAM slots?

Have I missed something in the BIOS prior to installing the second set/setting dual channel mode?

I'm not too fussed if the slots are dead, I'd just like to know if I've missed something, tinkering with RAM is not my speciality!

Have you got the RAM in the right slots for dual channel mode? Some boards want slots 1+2, others 1+3... some seem to like 2+4. Other than that, might be a timings issue - can you set the timings really loosely and pop the voltage for the RAM up a notch then save and exit and pop all the RAM in?

Although it might not work - I couldn't persuade a P35 board to boot with 8GB of RAM (in four sticks) a while ago; didn't matter how loose I set timings or how much extra voltage I gave it.

Hi there!
They should work together. Your BIOS should select the "worst" settings and run both. E.g. if one set has 5-5-5-15 and the other has 6-6-6-18 then they will run @6-6-6-18.
I rather doubt that your slots are dead. But you could try the other slots with one of the kits to figure out if these slots are dead.
I would check the voltage they need (both kits).
Maybe the BIOS sets the voltage too low so one kit just can work with this low value.
Maybe you should also check if you got the RAM in the right slots.
E.g. if you put them in slot 1 and 3 they run single channel but Slot 1&2 will work @dual. Just take a quick look in your manual to avoid this mistake.
Good Luck!

I've tried 1/3 and 2/4 and also 1/2 and 3/4 for the kits but its the same story

I've not yet attempted to adjust the RAM settings for the kit thats in (OCZ)

I was expecting them to just work with the settings being auto selected for the kits.

As far as I can tell they both require 1.8v

Is there any software that can test for dead slots?

Mixing different makes and models of ram is not a good idea, because of, exactly what your experiencing!

No, most likely you didn't miss anything in the bios, there's no special setting for running 8Gb's of ram, as opposed to 4Gb's
Your NB will be stressed more, so you may need more voltage there as well

To check your ram, test each stick separately with Memtest.
If all sticks pass with no errors, then it's your timings that are not compatible with each other.

Yeah OCZ platinum are 4-4-4-12(15) i dunno about the xms2. Put 1 stick in, set ram settings auto and set ram voltage to 2.0v, then try all 4 in.

If it doesnt work, try 5-5-5-18 timings with 1 stick in, then try 4.

With default settings, nothing should be stressed You may have to find the correct ram slots too. With 2 rams, find the slots for Dual Channel and populate the others.

That's the JEDEC spec for DDR2 RAM, but a lot of high-performance kits used voltages a lot higher than that. I've got a pair of Corsair sticks that state their stock voltage is 2.2v, which is the max I'd even think about feeding a DDR2 DIMM.

As someone else states above, I've had issues running 4 sticks of ram in more then 1 board before. Not sure why its a problem, or why they would put 4 slots if it can only handle 2 sticks...but this does seem to be the case sometimes.
