MB questions from an Old Newbie

Hello everyone,

New to the forums and haven't built a computer since the Pentium 233MHz days. Trying to get a leg up and hoping you guys can answer a few Motherboard questions I have.

PCI 3.0 - Is it worth it? Heard arguments from both camps. From "video cards don't even use 2.0 fully," to discussions about scrambling technology which will increase throughput of even current gen cards on a 3.0 setup (not my own words). The only board I know if with 3.0 is made by ASRock, a brand I'm not familiar with personally.

Form Factor - I plan to go Dual-Video Card, but would also like to incorporate a nice sound card in there. Do I need to go E-ATX for this or is there enough room for SLI/Crossfire and sound on an ATX board?

Z68 SSD Caching - I will have an SSD Boot drive. First question is, should I use a boot drive to also do the caching of my mechanical drives or is that asking for trouble? Second question is, SSD caching only allows you to select one HD to cache to the SSD. Does that include a Raid or is it limited to single non-raid HD's? What about Raid0+1?

ATI (AMD) and Intel - Seeing as ATI is owned by AMD (and technically doesn't exist in name anymore), are there compatibility or limitation issues with ATI video cards and Intel Processors

I hope this isn't too much all at once. Thank you for your patience in reading it all and hopefully answering.

Cheers,

bundok

To try to provide some answers:

PCI-E 3.0: Depends. While the new AMD 7000 GPUs are supposedly going to support PCI-E3, I doubt it'll make a lot of difference. Where it might have impact is with hardware RAID cards which have lots of SATA6 SSDs on them saturating the PCI-E bus. But chances of you running that many SSDs on a RAID controller is quite slim. Asrock is like a budget Asus (they're a daughter/spinoff, IIRC) but some of their boards have been really, really good.

Form factor: in terms of dual-GPU + extra cards, the form factor isn't important - the slot layout is. Which will depend on whether you use a PCI-E soundcard, or a PCI one. If you get a board with the right slot layout, there is enough room for dual-GPU + soundcard on ATX.

Z68 caching - sorry, can't answer this one.

ATi/Intel: there are no compatibility issues or limitations for AMD GPUs on Intel chipsets. If Intel did lock it down, they'd be opening themselves up for a whole host of litigation. AMD GPU on Intel board does very well.

Thanks Paradigm Shifter for the response. I probably won't put much stock in a PCI 3.0 board then. Thank you as well for assuaging my worries about ATI/Intel cross compatibility.

Does anyone have any advice regarding the Z68 Caching?
